The 56-year-old former journalist arrived alongside her husband, Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, for the formal evening hosted in honor of Chinese President Xi Jinping in the East Room of the White House.
For the stately occasion, Sanchez Bezos wore a vintage black off-the-shoulder Alexander McQueen gown from the 2000s. The form-fitting dress featured a deep, plunging neckline that left her décolletage bare to showcase a massive diamond necklace. The sparkling jewelry appeared to be a tennis necklace made of large emerald-cut diamonds, anchored by a prominent emerald-cut pendant in the center. She completed the look with oversized diamond drop earrings and a black rectangular clutch, while her husband wore a traditional black tuxedo.
While the ensemble maintained a classic color palette, the plunging silhouette quickly divided users on X, formerly known as Twitter. Critics questioned whether the revealing design was appropriate for a formal diplomatic gathering.
“Money does not buy one class. She dresses terribly. So inappropriate,” one user wrote on the platform.
Another shared, “Have some dignity for goodness sake. This is a state dinner, and you are 56 years old.”
Other observers focused on the immense wealth displayed by the jewelry, with one critic commenting, “Her diamond could feed a lot of starving children.”
This is not the first time Sanchez Bezos’s wardrobe choices at political events have sparked public discussion. At a previous White House state dinner in April 2024, hosted by President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden for Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, she faced similar criticism for wearing a red corset gown featuring semi-sheer lace.
Addressing past fashion scrutiny during the 2024 Forbes Power Women’s Summit, Sanchez Bezos maintained that she prefers to stay true to her personal style despite outside opinions. “People like to put you in a box, and I don’t fit in that box,” she said at the time. “People want me to dress or look or act a certain way. But I’m just being as authentic to me as I can be.”
