Born in Grenada in 1935 before relocating to Trinidad as a young child, Francisco built a remarkable career spanning more than seven decades. He earned international acclaim for his distinctive voice, sharp wit, and fearless political and social commentary, ultimately cementing his status as the “Calypso King of the World.”
Over his celebrated career, Francisco captured Trinidad and Tobago’s prestigious Calypso King or Monarch title eight times. He also secured the Carnival Road March competition victory on eight separate occasions, setting a high standard for Caribbean music and culture.
His daughter, Karen Francisco, shared the family’s official statement on social media, reflecting on both his immense public legacy and his private life.
“It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Trinidad and Tobago’s Calypso icon, Slinger Francisco, known to the world as ‘The Mighty Sparrow’,” the statement read. “He was also a husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, life partner and friend.”
