The Seattle Police Department has reaffirmed its official finding that Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain died by suicide in April 1994. The decision comes despite a private forensic team publishing a paper that argues the legendary musician was actually murdered.
Authorities disclosed additional administrative records tied to Cobain’s Remington Model 11 shotgun on September 1, 2026. The newly released paperwork includes a chain-of-custody document, a mobile release receipt, and two inventory lists. However, police emphasized that these files do not alter the established manner of death.
The recent pushback stems from a study published on November 6, 2025, in the International Journal of Forensic Sciences. Led by forensic specialist Bryan R. Burnett alongside several co-authors, the paper disputes the official narrative. The team argues that Cobain was incapacitated by an overdose before being shot, after which the crime scene was allegedly staged to look like a suicide.
Despite the renewed public debate and outside scrutiny, Seattle law enforcement stands by its decades-old conclusion, leaving the official verdict unchanged.
