The Denver Broncos pulled off a stunning turnaround on Sunday Night Football at Empower Field at Mile High, erasing a 16-point halftime deficit to defeat the Los Angeles Rams 30-26 in a thrilling Week 3 matchup.
Los Angeles completely controlled the opening two quarters, holding Denver to just 67 total offensive yards while building a comfortable 16-0 advantage. Quarterback Matthew Stafford led the early charge, connecting with tight end Tyler Higbee for a five-yard touchdown in the first quarter. Kicker Harrison Mevis added three field goals before halftime to leave the Broncos reeling and scoreless at the break.
However, the script flipped entirely in the second half. Sean Payton’s offense came alive in the third period, scoring 16 unanswered points to pull even:
- Quarterback Bo Nix threw a five-yard touchdown pass to Pat Bryant, followed by a two-point conversion pass to Jaylen Waddle.
- After forcing a Rams punt, Denver marched down the field again, capped by an eight–yard touchdown toss from Nix to tight end Nate Adkins.
- Nix added another successful two-point conversion pass to Bryant, tying the game at 16-16 late in the third quarter.
The fourth quarter descended into a back-and-forth slugfest. Following an interception by Rams cornerback Josh Wallace, Mevis converted his fourth field goal of the night to put Los Angeles back ahead 19-16 with 8:40 remaining.
The momentum swung violently moments later when Denver safety Talanoa Hufanga intercepted Stafford and returned it 66 yards for a touchdown, giving the Broncos their first lead of the night at 23-19 with 4:49 left on the clock.
The Rams answered immediately. Stafford launched a 48-yard touchdown pass to receiver Konata Mumpfield, recapturing a 26-23 lead for Los Angeles with 3:38 remaining.
Not to be outdone, Nix orchestrated a 10-play, 65-yard drive. Facing crucial late-game pressure and aided by Rams penalties, Nix ultimately powered over the goal line on a one-yard rushing score with just 47 seconds left to put Denver ahead 30-26.
Los Angeles drove down to the Denver 19-yard line in the final seconds, but Hufanga sealed the dramatic victory by intercepting Stafford’s final pass in the end zone as time expired, lifting the Broncos to a 2-1 record.
