Hospitality venues and local businesses across New South Wales are bracing for a massive financial windfall as the NRL and NRLW Premiership Grand Finals return to Accor Stadium on Sunday, October 4. The marquee sporting event is projected to inject $20 million directly into the state economy.
More than 80,000 rugby league fans are expected to fill Accor Stadium in Sydney. Hundreds of thousands more will gather at pubs, clubs, and hospitality spots nationwide. The high-stakes double-header features the Sydney Roosters taking on the Brisbane Broncos in the NRLW decider. This is followed by the Roosters facing the Newcastle Knights in the men’s championship game.
Hunter Region Experiences Unprecedented Grand Final Fever
The return of the Newcastle Knights to the grand final for the first time since 2001 has ignited immense enthusiasm throughout the Hunter region. Regional venues have sold out reservations, added extra television screens and tables, and doubled their standard beer deliveries to meet surging customer demand.
Bottle shops across the area have reported heavy foot traffic as supporters prepare for home viewing parties. Additionally, around 22,500 tickets were snapped up for the McDonald Jones Stadium grand final live site within just three minutes of going on sale. This highlights the intense local backing.
Minister for the Hunter Yasmin Catley emphasized the palpable energy across the community:
The Hunter is absolutely buzzing. You can see it everywhere, from packed pubs to red and blue right across the region. All eyes are on us. We back our own, we get behind our team and, when something big is happening, the whole region gets around it.
Unprecedented Demand Across Sydney Hospitality and Tourism
Accommodation providers are enjoying a massive surge in bookings over the long weekend. Data from Accommodation Australia shows that hotel bookings in Sydney reached robust levels. In fact, 85 percent of all rooms were booked out ahead of the weekend as interstate and international visitors flooded the city.
Australian Rugby League Commission Chairman Peter V’landys AM noted the massive reach of the event:
This year alone over 40,000 tickets, which is more than half the stadium, have been sold to interstate and international fans, providing a huge economic stimulus to the local economy and a $50 million plus return on investment to the NSW Government.
Thousands of staff are deployed at Accor Stadium, including hundreds of chefs and catering personnel preparing thousands of liters of beer and metric tons of hot chips. Because of this, the economic ripple effects extend far beyond the immediate stadium perimeter into retail, transport, and consumer-facing services.
