Music icon Beyoncé turned heads in New York City on Sunday, September 13. She attended the star-studded world premiere of JAY-Z’s highly anticipated HBO documentary series, “JAY-Z IN 8.” The black-tie event took place at New York’s historic Metropolitan Opera House. It drew an elite crowd of hip-hop royalty, industry leaders, and special guests.
JAY-Z walked the red carpet in a sharp tuxedo alongside the film’s director, legendary producer Rick Rubin. Meanwhile, Beyoncé and her mother, Tina Knowles, arrived quietly, slipping into the theater just as the screening began. Despite bypassing the main photo line, Queen Bey’s presence electrified the atmosphere. Her appearance followed a busy summer supporting her husband’s musical endeavors.
Inside ‘JAY-Z IN 8’
The eight-part documentary series offers an intimate, candid look at the life, lyrical evolution, and colossal three-decade career of the rap titan. The project centers around extensive conversations between JAY-Z and Rick Rubin. They reflect on decades of classic music, childhood memories, and creative experiments.
The series explores legendary tracks from across the rapper’s catalog. This includes music from foundational projects like “Reasonable Doubt” (1996), “The Blueprint” (2001), “The Black Album” (2003), and “4:44” (2017). In the official trailer released by HBO, the Grammy-winning artist recalls discovering his obsession with writing at around 9 years old.
Speaking with PEOPLE at the premiere, JAY-Z shared that the documentary organically evolved from deep discussions with Rubin rather than a calculated release schedule. “We didn’t create this piece to come out at this time,” he explained. “We were just curious to have this conversation around music and writing.”
A Star-Studded New York Audience
The Metropolitan Opera House premiere brought out an impressive roster of hip-hop icons and public figures. They gathered to celebrate the milestone. Among those spotted on the red carpet and inside the auditorium were Fat Joe, DJ Khaled, Yo Gotti, Charlamagne tha God, Winnie Harlow, Gunna, Nas, Rakim, Q-Tip, Swizz Beatz, and Alicia Keys.
The premiere coincides with a major anniversary period for the Brooklyn-born artist. JAY-Z has spent 2026 celebrating 30 years since the release of his debut album, “Reasonable Doubt.” The milestone included three massive, sold-out concerts at Yankee Stadium in July and a recent powerhouse performance at the Stade de France in Paris featuring special guests Pharrell Williams and Justin Timberlake.
Release Schedule for HBO Max
Fans eager to watch the deeply personal retrospective will not have to wait long. The first two episodes of “JAY-Z IN 8” premiere on Wednesday, September 18, on HBO and HBO Max. Following the debut, two new episodes will air each Friday through October 9, guiding viewers through eight distinct chapters of hip-hop history.
