The fatal crash occurred at approximately 9:35 p.m. on Friday as two school buses traveled back from a football game against Johnson County.

Preliminary reports from the Tennessee Highway Patrol indicate that a southbound Subaru, driven by 35-year-old Douglas McMillian, crossed the center line in the 7000 block of Highway 91. The vehicle struck the school bus head-on, sending both vehicles off the roadway into a ditch.

Authorities confirmed that Douglas McMillian died at the scene from injuries sustained in the impact. None of the students on board suffered fatal injuries. Three students and the school bus driver sustained minor injuries and were transported to local medical facilities for evaluation and treatment.

Ballad Health officials stated that patients went to Johnson City Medical Center and Johnston Memorial Hospital. Incident command was temporarily activated at Johnston Memorial Hospital to manage the influx of patients. The first of the two traveling school buses was not involved in the collision.

Secondary Incident and Community Impact

In addition to the primary head-on collision, authorities reported a secondary crash near Water Road connected to the initial incident. This secondary crash resulted in minor injuries to one person, who also received medical evaluation.

Johnson County Sheriff Shawn Brown expressed gratitude to local law enforcement, fire departments, emergency medical services, and dispatchers for managing a difficult scene. Washington County Public Schools and Johnson County Schools extended support systems to students, staff, and families affected by the tragedy.

The Tennessee Highway Patrol is leading the ongoing investigation to determine why the Subaru crossed the center line. Additional details will be released as the official investigation progresses.
