A 34-year-old Brooklyn driver faces vehicular manslaughter and impaired driving charges. These charges follow a violent single-vehicle rollover on the Grand Central Parkway in Queens early Sunday morning. The crash resulted in the death of a 23-year-old female passenger, according to the New York City Police Department.
The fatal crash occurred at approximately 4:07 a.m. on Oct. 4 along the westbound lanes of the parkway near the Steinway Street overpass in Astoria. Investigators determined that Anthony Dickson was operating a gray Honda Accord in the right lane when he suddenly lost control, swerved across multiple lanes of traffic, and crashed into a side safety barrier.
Crash Sequence and Police Investigation
Following the initial impact with the guardrail, the Honda Accord struck a roadside light pole. This caused the sedan to flip completely over onto its roof in the active roadway. Law enforcement and emergency medical services arrived quickly at the scene to find severe structural damage to the vehicle.
The force of the rollover ejected the backseat passenger, 23-year-old Arianna Arregui, directly onto the highway pavement. Emergency responders treated Arregui at the site for severe physical and head trauma before rushing her to Elmhurst Hospital. Medical personnel pronounced her dead shortly after her arrival.
Police officials noted that both Dickson and Arregui resided less than a mile apart from each other in the Bushwick neighborhood of Brooklyn. Dickson emerged from the wreckage uninjured and was taken into custody at the scene by responding officers.
Single-Vehicle Clarification and Legal Charges
In the immediate aftermath of the incident, initial police reports suggested that a second motor vehicle might have been involved. However, following a preliminary review of physical evidence and witness statements, investigators formally corrected that account. They confirmed that Dickson’s Honda Accord was the sole vehicle involved in the crash.
Dickson has been formally charged with vehicular manslaughter and driving while impaired by drugs. Authorities have not yet publicly released details regarding the specific substances suspected to have caused the impairment. They also have not published data concerning the vehicle’s exact speed at the time of the loss of control.
The investigation into the tragic incident remains ongoing as local prosecutors prepare the case for upcoming court proceedings in Queens County.
