Channel 4 has officially launched its highly anticipated six-part original legal drama, Pierre. It stars award-winning actor David Harewood OBE in the title role. The Lighthouse, the indie producer behind Scoop, created the contemporary series. The show follows a West London duty solicitor. He risks his career, family, and personal safety to investigate the suspicious death of a young Black client.
In the series, Harewood portrays Pierre Jeffreys. He is a charming, funny, and glamorous figure working within an unglamorous, high-pressure profession. Pierre juggles financial strains and a fragile personal life. He takes on a complex case involving a young man named Michael, who was arrested for allegedly stealing his aunt’s car. Michael dies in suspicious circumstances following claims of police corruption. Pierre rejects the official narrative and pushes back against a chilling web of institutional injustice.
Creative Team and Production Background
Pierre is co-written by BAFTA-winning screenwriter Roy Williams OBE, known for Soon Gone: The Windrush Chronicles and Fallout. BAFTA-nominated writer John Donnelly, whose credits include Summerwater and Utopia, co-wrote the series. The writing duo drew inspiration from the often-overlooked realities of the legal profession.
Duty solicitors are the unsung heroes of the legal profession. Overworked, underpaid. They can be called out anytime, never knowing who or what lies in store for them. They are full of stories, it’s a thrill to tell them.
Ollie Madden, Director of Film4 and Drama, and Gwawr Lloyd, Commissioning Editor for Drama, commissioned the series for Channel 4. Hilary Salmon serves as an executive producer alongside Donnelly, Williams, and Harewood. Jo Johnson produces the project. Sphere Abacus manages international distribution for the series.
Cast and Character Lineup
David Harewood leads the ensemble. Pierre also features a stellar supporting cast bringing the gritty West London setting to life:
- Michele Austin (This Is Going to Hurt) as Charlotte Manners, Pierre’s joint managing partner.
- Jason Flemyng (Trigger Point) as DS Ronnie Miller, Pierre’s close friend.
- Sara Powell (Holby Blue) as Celeste Jeffreys, Pierre’s wife.
- Dean-Charles Chapman (Game of Thrones) as Danny Headman.
- Nikkita Chadha (Hijack) as Alecia Khan.
- Christopher Fairbank (Andor) as Sean Lambert.
- Cherrelle Skeete (Hanna) as Brenda Dean.
- Dylan Ennis as Eli Jeffreys and Ezrae Maye as Michael.
Themes and Narrative Scope
Beyond the central mystery of Michael’s death, each episode of Pierre explores standalone legal cases featuring unexpected twists and turns. Set against a backdrop of severe legal aid cuts, Pierre and his team frequently battle administrative hurdles and financial instability. They bend the rules to fight for their clients’ rights.
The crew filmed the drama entirely on location in West London earlier this year. The show shifts focus away from affluent neighborhoods like Kensington and Notting Hill. Instead, it opts for the grittier environment of the capital’s legal aid trenches. As Pierre digs deeper into the justice system, the narrative tests his moral compass. It proves that when someone takes on the establishment, the establishment retaliates.
