Durham Constabulary has launched a manhunt for a balaclava-clad gang following a violent burglary. An 82-year-old disabled woman was attacked with the blunt side of an axe during the incident. The terrifying event occurred at the victim’s bungalow on Coast View in Blackhall Colliery, County Durham, at approximately 1:25 a.m. on October 4.
According to police reports and family members, the ordeal began when the elderly resident heard tapping on her window. She tried to secure her front door using a security chain, but the intruders forced entry. They struck her, demanded money, and tore jewelry directly from her arms and hands.
The victim’s grandson, Kieran Townley, shared details of the attack publicly. He stated that the masked intruders were armed with an axe and knives when they broke into his grandmother’s home. Despite her injuries, the resilient 82-year-old fended off the attackers as best she could. A neighboring resident then heard the commotion and intervened, scaring the suspects away.
Police Appeal and Ongoing Investigation
Emergency services arrived at the scene shortly after the suspects fled. The victim was transported to a local hospital, where she received treatment for a concussion and extensive bruising. She also received specialist support from local welfare teams.
Peterlee Police and Durham Constabulary are treating the incident with the utmost urgency. Detectives are urging local residents, drivers, and business owners to come forward. They ask anyone who captured suspicious activity, private CCTV, or dashcam footage in the Coast View area early Sunday morning to contact them immediately.
