British actor Jason Isaacs marked a major personal milestone on Tuesday, October 6, 2026, celebrating 28 years of sobriety. The 63-year-old star, widely recognized for his memorable role as Lucius Malfoy in the Harry Potter film franchise, shared a candid video message on Instagram to reflect on his journey. He used the occasion to encourage individuals struggling with substance abuse to seek professional support.
In his public address, Isaacs opened up about a time in his life when he felt entirely trapped. He was once convinced that his addiction would lead to an untimely death. By surrendering to his situation and seeking help through the 12 Steps program at Alcoholics Anonymous, the Golden Globe-nominated actor completely turned his life around.
“28 years ago today I woke up having spent the night without drugs, which was the first time that had happened for decades, without drugs or drink,” Isaacs shared in his video. “I’ve lived a life which is drug and drink free since… if you are in a dire situation and think there is no escape I’m here to tell you there is, just ask.”
Reflecting on Decades of Teenage Struggles
Isaacs has previously been open about the roots of his substance abuse. Speaking during an interview in the series Letter to My Younger Self for The Big Issue, he revealed that his addictive personality surfaced early in life. By the age of 16, heavy partying had already introduced him to a decades-long relationship with drugs.
Recalling his first experience with alcohol at just 12 years old-where he and friends consumed an entire bottle of whiskey and Southern Comfort in a restroom-Isaacs noted the immediate, destructive consequences that followed. Despite waking up the next morning with severe physical pain and deep embarrassment, his mind immediately gravitated toward repeating the experience.
“I just know I chased the sheer ecstatic joy I felt that night for another 20 years with increasingly dire consequences,” Isaacs wrote.
Finding Hope and Community Support
As his addiction deepened, Isaacs described reaching a dark psychological space where he felt entirely disconnected from humanity. However, achieving and maintaining long-term sobriety allowed him to rediscover his natural empathy and appreciate life on its own terms.
While acknowledging that daily life is not without its challenges, the actor expressed profound gratitude for the community members who helped love him back to life. He emphasized that while 12-step programs worked for his specific recovery path, multiple avenues exist for anyone looking to escape the cycle of addiction.
“You can live a life without drugs and drink and engage with life’s terms which can be magnificent,” Isaacs concluded. “So good luck and I give you all my love.”
