Goldenvoice is launching its brand-new electronic music festival, Head Trip, at the Empire Polo Club in Indio, California, drawing an estimated 70,000 visitors to the region on October 10 and 11. While the expected crowd is smaller than Coachella’s typical 125,000 attendees, the massive influx of fans is still expected to bring significant activity to local roads, residents, and businesses ahead of the desert’s traditionally busy April festival season.
New Traffic Controls and Monroe Street Test Closure
Managing large crowds around the Empire Polo Club is familiar territory for city officials, but Head Trip brings a brand-new logistical test. Indio Community Services Manager Jim Curtis, who has worked with the city and Goldenvoice on festival impacts for more than two decades, noted that the city is implementing a street closure not previously used during major festival weekends.
Monroe Street will be completely closed between Avenue 50 and Avenue 52 on Saturday and Sunday for safety and security. City officials are closely monitoring how the closure impacts nearby residents, commuters, and businesses. The results of this weekend trial will help determine whether a similar traffic plan is adopted when Coachella and Stagecoach return in the spring.
Indio Police are also ramping up preparations across the area. Sgt. Abraham Plata advised residents and visitors to expect major delays near the festival grounds and to consider alternate routes. Law enforcement staffing has been increased, with additional traffic and patrol officers deployed throughout the weekend. Officials recommend that drivers arriving for the festival prepare ahead of time by ensuring adequate fuel levels and keeping emergency water and snacks inside vehicles.
A Unique Lineup and Single-Stage Format
Head Trip sets itself apart from crowded festival circuits through its curated lineup and concentrated layout. Marketed under the tagline “Just This Once,” the 18-and-older event features a rare single-stage format designed to eliminate scheduling conflicts and stage-hopping anxiety.
Saturday night’s performances are anchored by Calvin Harris, supported by FISHER and Chris Lake under their “Under Construction” banner, alongside Peggy Gou, Four Tet, Seth Troxler, and Ben Sterling. Sunday’s lineup features co-headliners Skrillex and Swedish House Mafia, with additional performances from Dom Dolla, KETTAMA, The Blessed Madonna, and DJ Harvey.
In addition to the main stage, the festival introduces cutting-edge production elements, including the U.S. debut of Floating Points’ custom-built Sunflower Sound System inside a dedicated acoustic dome featuring panels made from mycelium.
Local Economic Impact and Community Support
For local businesses near the venue, the arrival of 70,000 visitors provides a welcome economic boost following the slower summer months. Coffee shops, restaurants, and hospitality providers in the area have increased in-house preparations, stocking up on supplies to accommodate festival workers and early-arriving attendees.
To balance these economic benefits with community concerns, the city of Indio continues to coordinate closely with Goldenvoice and local neighborhoods. Indio is operating a dedicated 24-hour festival hotline at 760-391-4112, answered by real staff members to assist residents and visitors with immediate traffic, access, or noise inquiries throughout the weekend.
