Royal Navy Sailor Charged With Spying Under National Security Act

A 24-year-old Royal Navy service member from Bedfordshire was charged on Thursday, October 8, 2026, with offenses under the National Security Act. Counter-terrorism police alleged he obtained protected information intended to benefit an unnamed foreign power.

According to the Metropolitan Police, Teddy Young was arrested at his home in Bedfordshire on Tuesday, October 6, and remained in custody before his scheduled appearance at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Thursday. The Crown Prosecution Service authorized the charges on Wednesday, covering alleged conduct that occurred between November 26, 2024, and May 21, 2025.

Details of the National Security Act Charges

Court documents indicate that Young faces specific charges under sections 1 and 18 of the National Security Act 2023. Investigators allege that during the specified seven-month window, the service member engaged in conduct in preparation for committing an offense of disclosing protected information.

Authorities accuse him of obtaining, copying, recording, or retaining protected information with the intention that his actions would benefit a foreign power. Police stated that he carried out these actions knowing, or having regard to other matters known to him, that the conduct ought reasonably to be known as prejudicial to the safety or interests of the United Kingdom.

Commander Helen Flanagan, Head of Counter Terrorism Policing London, emphasized the gravity of the situation in an official statement.

“These are very serious charges against a serving member of the armed forces. We have worked extremely closely with relevant operational colleagues within the Ministry of Defence as our investigation has progressed to ensure appropriate measures could be taken to mitigate any potential risks linked to this matter.”

Previous Arrest and Security Clearance Suspension

Reports indicate that Young was initially arrested in connection with the inquiry on May 21, 2025, in Hampshire, before being rearrested this week at his residential address in Bedfordshire. Following his initial arrest last year, his security clearance was immediately suspended, and he was removed from active duties.

Insiders note that Young spent the intervening months on administrative leave, ensuring he had zero ongoing access to sensitive or classified military intelligence while counter-terrorism detectives continued their complex inquiry alongside Ministry of Defence officials.

Broader Context and Independent Investigations

Law enforcement officials clarified that the charges brought against Young are entirely unrelated to a separate counter-terrorism probe regarding suspicious activity near RAF Fairford. That parallel investigation resulted in the arrest of a 22-year-old British man earlier in the week, but police confirmed no operational intersection exists between the two cases.

A spokesperson for the Royal Navy issued a brief statement addressing the legal developments:

  • A member of the Royal Navy has been formally charged with National Security Act offenses.
  • The investigation was executed by Counter Terrorism Policing London.
  • Officials stressed that because legal proceedings are active and ongoing, further public comment is inappropriate at this stage.

As the legal process moves forward at Westminster Magistrates’ Court, authorities have urged the public to avoid speculation to ensure that the integrity of the judicial system remains uncompromised.
