According to Philadelphia Police Commissioner Kevin Bethel, officers established a perimeter in the busy museum district corridor as pedestrians and visitors sought shelter. Nearby institutions, including the Franklin Institute and Calder Gardens, implemented brief safety lockdowns while emergency units arrived.

Confrontation and Standoff on the Parkway

Authorities stated that officers attempted to engage the man using a bullhorn during a standoff that lasted approximately 20 minutes. Bethel noted that the individual continually pointed and waved a revolver at responding personnel while officers retreated to take cover behind vehicles and park infrastructure.

Investigators said the situation escalated when the man fired a shot in the direction of officers. In response, a Philadelphia police officer and a SEPTA transit police officer each discharged their service weapons, striking the man twice.

Aftermath and Investigation

Emergency medical personnel transported the unidentified man, estimated to be in his 50s, to Jefferson University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 11:36 a.m. No police officers or members of the public were injured during the incident.

Investigators recovered a revolver near park benches at the scene. Sections of the Ben Franklin Parkway were temporarily closed to traffic while crime scene units processed the area, with all roadways reopening by early Friday afternoon.

  • The Philadelphia Police Department’s internal affairs and officer-involved shooting units are reviewing the incident.
