Boston Blue Showrunners Keep Tom Selleck Return in Play

October 10, 2026 3 min read 0 comments

The creative team behind the CBS drama Boston Blue is keeping open the possibility of Tom Selleck returning as Frank Reagan, the central family patriarch he portrayed for 14 seasons on Blue Bloods. In interviews published October 7, 2026, showrunners Brandon Margolis and Brandon Sonnier confirmed they want Selleck to appear in the spinoff series, provided they can develop a storyline that makes natural sense for his character.

Selleck, 81, famously played New York Police Department Commissioner Frank Reagan from 2010 until Blue Bloods concluded its run in 2024. Boston Blue, which premiered in October 2025, follows his on-screen son Danny Reagan, played by Donnie Wahlberg, as he relocates from New York to Boston and joins the Boston Police Department.

Showrunners Address Potential Frank Reagan Appearance

In an interview with Screen Rant, published October 7 and later covered by outlets like People and Men’s Journal, Margolis explained that bringing Selleck aboard remains a top priority for the production team. However, the actor’s availability and narrative demands present ongoing practical considerations.

“It remains wish fulfillment on our part. We would love to have Tom, and to get to write for Tom would be a dream come true,” Margolis stated. He added that a potential cameo or guest appearance depends heavily on finding the right narrative justification. “It’s a long, never-ending conversation, let’s put it that way. Because as much as we love Tom, we know how busy he is. So we’re always trying to think of ways to make that story possible.”

Co-creator Brandon Sonnier echoed these sentiments, emphasizing that the writers room refuses to force a reunion just for the sake of nostalgia.

“We don’t ever want to do it just for the sake of doing it,” Sonnier said. “The right story that brings Frank into the world of Boston Blue will present itself, and when it does, it’s going to be an episode of television that we can only dream to write.”

Cast Crossovers and Season 2 Details

While Selleck’s involvement remains uncertain, several other Blue Bloods alumni have already crossed over into the spinoff. Familiar faces including Len Cariou, Marisa Ramirez, and Bridget Moynahan have appeared, and Will Estes is scheduled to return as Jamie Reagan during Season 2.

Sonequa Martin-Green, who stars alongside Donnie Wahlberg as Detective Lena Silver, has also voiced enthusiasm for a potential Selleck appearance. Speaking to Woman’s World, Martin-Green noted that the cast and crew would ensure the timing and script are handled carefully out of respect for Selleck’s standards.

Selleck himself has previously expressed mixed feelings regarding reprising the iconic role. Following the cancellation of Blue Bloods by CBS, the actor noted in late 2024 interviews that while he treasures the show’s legacy, he believes his tenure as Frank Reagan reached its natural conclusion. Nevertheless, he has stopped short of completely closing the door on future guest appearances.

Season 2 of Boston Blue premieres on CBS, with new episodes airing weekly as the production team continues to weigh creative paths for the Reagan family universe.
