Phil Campbell Revives The Temperance Movement With New Album

October 10, 2026 3 min read 0 comments

Frontman Phil Campbell has officially reunited with The Temperance Movement, marking a major comeback for the Glasgow blues-rock group with their fourth studio album, New Promise Land Incorporated. According to BBC Scotland News and subsequent album details, the return follows years of personal turmoil, including Campbell’s struggles with alcohol and drugs that contributed to the band’s initial collapse.

The roots of the band’s breakup trace back to a tumultuous period in late 2019. Reflecting on the final stretch before their hiatus, Campbell pointed to a disastrous performance in Wales as the breaking point where he realized the group had effectively dissolved. He departed the band the following month to focus entirely on rebuilding his personal life, achieving sobriety, and addressing a separate health scare involving a vocal cord cyst.

The Road to Recovery and Reunion

Despite the bleak outlook following their 2019 split, the members of The Temperance Movement found their way back to one another. A successful reunion tour in 2025 across the UK and Europe rekindled their chemistry and proved that their connection with fans remained as strong as ever. That momentum laid the groundwork for the band to re-enter the studio.

Recorded in April 2026, New Promise Land Incorporated was produced and mixed by acclaimed producer Ethan Johns, whose past credits include work with Kings of Leon, Laura Marling, and Ray LaMontagne. Eschewing modern glossy production techniques, the band chose to record live to tape, capturing the raw, unadorned energy of five musicians playing together in the same room.

A Return to Roots With New Material

Released via Earache Records, the 10-track album serves as the band’s first collection of new material in eight years, following 2018’s chart-topping record A Deeper Cut. Lead single “Eat You Alive” set the tone for the release, combining gritty vocals with rugged guitar riffs that evoke classic rock mainstays like The Rolling Stones and The Black Crowes.

Speaking about the inspiration behind the lead track, Campbell noted how the lyrics reflect his transition from a super-urban home life in Glasgow to the Somerset countryside during the writing process, while also channeling broader anxieties about modern societal pressures. Alongside tracks like “Shadows,” “Silverlight Blues,” and “Mongrels,” the album showcases a revitalized lineup consisting of Campbell, guitarists Luke Potashnick and Paul Sayer, bassist Nick Fyffe, and drummer Simon Lea.

Extensive Touring Plans

The release of New Promise Land Incorporated is supported by a busy schedule of live performances. Following appearances at major European summer festivals including the Steelhouse Festival and Maid of Stone Festival, the band is embarking on a 21-date UK and European headline tour.

For Campbell, stepping back into the spotlight represents a hard-fought personal and professional triumph. Having conquered his past addictions and vocal hurdles, the singer is once again embracing the thrill of live performance, turning a near-tragic career collapse into an inspiring second act for one of Britain’s defining modern rock bands.
