Hashi Market officially opened its first West Coast store in Cupertino on Oct. 9, introducing a sprawling 20,000-square-foot Japanese grocery and lifestyle destination to the Bay Area. Located at 20558 Stevens Creek Blvd. inside the Crossroads Center at the former Sprouts Farmers Market site, the grand opening drew massive crowds, with approximately 1,700 visitors passing through the doors on day one.
Anticipation for the debut ran high as early shoppers began lining up outside the entrance as early as 7:30 a.m. ahead of the 10 a.m. ribbon-cutting ceremony. Traditional Yosakoi dancers from Japan performed for the waiting crowd, setting a celebratory tone for the company’s milestone expansion. Inside, checkout lines remained packed throughout the morning, with cashiers processing roughly 300 transactions per hour.
A Hybrid Supermarket and Department Store Experience
Established in New York City in 2024, Hashi Market currently operates six locations in NYC, with additional branches planned for Chelsea and the Upper East Side. The Cupertino storefront blends a traditional supermarket with a mini department store concept, offering a wide array of imported Japanese products, fresh seafood, specialty meats, bakery goods, and beauty products.
The market features an extensive selection of items imported directly from Hokkaido, a northern Japanese region renowned for its rich dairy and agricultural products. Shoppers can find premium Hokkaido beef, rice, cheesecake, chocolates, and high-end crown melons priced at $59. Two massive aisles are also dedicated to lifestyle, home goods, and beauty products, featuring popular Japanese brands such as Canmake, Senka, and Bonbory.
Grab-and-Go Offerings and Late-Night Sushi Discounts
Designed to cater to local tech workers and students from nearby De Anza College, Hashi Market places a heavy emphasis on its prepared and grab-and-go food selections. Three large-format kiosks offer hot and cold options, including chicken katsu bento boxes, curry bowls, salmon teriyaki, and $26 A5 wagyu beef rice bowls.
Following a popular practice from its New York locations, the Cupertino store implements a 30% discount on all remaining sushi rolls and nigiri boxes every evening after 8 p.m. Operating hours are daily from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m., providing late-night shoppers access to fresh sashimi, onigiri, and baked goods.
National Expansion and Bay Area Growth
Operations Director Justin Li and Head of Operations Ava Liu noted that Cupertino was chosen for its central location, diverse demographics, and established appreciation for Japanese cuisine. The store joins a broader regional boom of Asian supermarket openings across Silicon Valley, which includes recent debuts by T&T Supermarket in San Jose, Tokyo Central in Emeryville, and H Mart in Dublin.
The Cupertino opening serves as the springboard for Hashi Market’s aggressive national growth strategy. The company plans to roll out approximately 10 to 15 additional stores by the end of 2027, with targeted expansions into states such as Massachusetts, Colorado, and Washington. Locally, Hashi has acquired former Marina Grocery properties in Milpitas, San Mateo, and Union City, and is currently evaluating those sites to determine future branding and potential market conversions.
