ITV has officially renewed its hit Scottish crime drama Karen Pirie for a third series. Lauren Lyle will reprise her role as the sharp-witted Detective Inspector Karen Pirie, leading a brand-new adaptation for World Productions based on Val McDermid’s acclaimed novel, The Skeleton Road. Filming for the upcoming six-episode run is scheduled to begin in 2027.
The renewal follows the strong performance of the show’s second series, which pulled in an average of 5.3 million viewers, peaking at 5.6 million on ITV and STV. The sophomore season also proved to be a major draw on demand platforms, racking up 11 million streams across ITVX and STV Player.
A Body in an Edinburgh Rooftop and Balkan Secrets
The third series will dive into a politically charged mystery that begins when human remains are discovered hidden within the roof of a derelict building in Edinburgh. According to details released by ITV and World Productions, the victim fled the Balkans conflict during the 1990s and sought refuge in Scotland, eventually marrying a woman who has since become a famous author.
As DI Karen Pirie uncovers the dead man’s high-profile connections, she steps into a dangerous web of historic secrets and personal revenge. With a potential cycle of killings threatening to expand, Karen must untangle events from decades past before the modern-day body count rises.
While the first two series adapted McDermid’s The Distant Echo and A Darker Domain respectively, The Skeleton Road continues the franchise’s trademark exploration of how old wounds cast long shadows over contemporary investigations.
Behind-the-Scenes Changes and New Episode Format
The third series introduces notable changes both behind the camera and in its broadcast structure. Scottish screenwriter Gillian Roger Park, known for her work on The Bombing of Pan Am 103 and The Young Offenders, takes over writing duties from Emer Kenny, who adapted the first two outings.
Additionally, ITV has adjusted the show’s format. Instead of the previous structure consisting of three feature-length instalments, season three will comprise six one-hour episodes, offering a fresh narrative pacing for the multi-chapter investigation.
Lead star Lauren Lyle is also stepping into an expanded role as an executive producer for the upcoming season. Commenting on her promotion and the show’s return, Lyle said:
Playing Karen Pirie has become one of the most delicious thrills of my career and knowing that people of the world want more of her and her bumbag is an absolute honour! With the added joy of getting to put my Executive Producer hat on for season 3, I can finally, much like Karen, whip all those higher ups in to shape.
Val McDermid, who also serves as an executive producer, expressed her excitement for the upcoming adaptation of her 2014 novel:
I’m thrilled to hear that plans are so far advanced for Karen Pirie series three. The Skeleton Road is a favourite with many readers, so it’ll be particularly exciting to see it adapted. I feel very privileged to have such a talented team bringing my books to a wider audience.
Production Team and Expected Cast
Alongside Lyle, McDermid, and Park, World Productions CEO Simon Heath returns as an executive producer. Marcus Wilson is back as producer, with Deli Segal joining the writer’s room to pen an episode, and Ella Tayler Baron serving as associate producer.
While official casting announcements for the supporting ensemble have not yet been finalized, viewers anticipate the return of core regular characters alongside a fresh roster of guest stars tied to the central Balkan-conflict case.
Series one and two of Karen Pirie remain available to stream on ITVX. An official premiere date for the third series on ITV, STV, and ITVX has not yet been announced.
