A 63-year-old man has died after his white SUV crashed into the front of a popular gelato and matcha bar at Bondi Beach in Sydney’s eastern suburbs. NSW Police believe the driver suffered a medical episode behind the wheel before veering off the road.
Emergency crews rushed to the scene at the intersection of Campbell Parade and Beach Road at approximately 1:40 pm on Tuesday following reports that a vehicle had smashed into the storefront of the Luca and Luca gelato bar.
Driver Rushed to Hospital in Critical Condition
According to NSW Police, paramedics treated the motorist at the scene before transporting him to St Vincent’s Hospital in a critical condition. Despite medical efforts, he later succumbed to his injuries and passed away on Tuesday afternoon.
Investigators believe a sudden medical episode moments before the collision caused the vehicle to leave the main strip and drive straight into the building. Authorities confirmed that no other pedestrians, customers, or staff members were injured, despite Campbell Parade being a heavily trafficked strip running alongside Bondi Beach.
Extensive Damage and Local Impact
The collision caused major structural damage to the front facade of the Luca and Luca shopfront and severe impact damage to the vehicle. Social media footage and images shared in the aftermath showed debris scattered across the entryways.
Emergency services responded quickly, diverting local traffic and advising motorists to avoid the busy precinct while structural assessments and police investigations were carried out.
Nearby businesses were also affected by the emergency response. The neighbouring AC FLO barbershop, owned by footballer Angus Crichton, closed its doors for the afternoon out of respect and caution following the incident.
Ongoing Police Investigation
NSW Police have launched a full investigation into the exact circumstances surrounding the crash. A formal report is currently being prepared for the coroner to determine the official medical and driving timeline leading up to the fatal event.
Anyone with further information, dashcam footage, or witness accounts related to the incident is encouraged to contact local authorities or Crime Stoppers.
