Netflix has expanded its international crime and drama catalog with the release of The Trap, a six-part German psychological thriller. Based on Melanie Raabe’s bestselling 2017 novel of the same name, the limited series follows a reclusive bestselling author. She sets an elaborate, high-stakes trap to identify the man she believes murdered her younger sister nearly a decade ago.
Isabel Kleefeld developed, wrote, and directed the adaptation, working alongside producers Tom Spiess and Friederich Oetker. This creative team previously spearheaded the acclaimed German Netflix crime drama hit Dear Child. Constantin Film produced the new miniseries, with Oliver Berben attached as executive producer. The show delivers a tense, self-contained cat-and-mouse narrative across all six episodes, which dropped simultaneously for global streaming.
Plot and Premise: A Decade of Isolation and Revenge
The story centers on Lisa Konrad, portrayed by Friederike Becht. Lisa is a celebrated novelist who has not left her large villa in over ten years. She retreated entirely from public life after discovering the body of her younger sister, Anna Wilking, played by Josephine Thiesen. Following this trauma and a subsequent stay in a psychiatric hospital, Lisa built a secluded life inside a residence rented from her publishing company. She continues to write successful books under a pseudonym.
Everything changes when Lisa spots a Berlin journalist named Robert Lenzen, played by Hans Löw, during a television interview. Convinced that Lenzen is the man she saw standing over Anna’s body all those years ago, Lisa breaks her decade-long isolation. Rather than going straight to the police, she devises a cunning plan. She begins writing a new novel inspired by her sister’s murder and uses the resulting media publicity to lure Lenzen into her home for an exclusive interview, turning her sanctuary into a trap.
