Chizzy Akudolu Shares Heartbreaking Grief After Losing Parents

October 14, 2026 3 min read 0 comments

Actress and comedian Chizzy Akudolu has opened up about the profound grief she experienced after losing both of her parents, sharing how their passings left an enduring void in her life. The 53-year-old star discussed her devastating family losses during her appearance at the Best Heroes Awards held at The Waldorf Hilton in London.

Akudolu’s father, Raphael Nwose Akudolu, passed away on July 27 after spending two weeks in the hospital. His death followed the passing of her mother, Maria, who died in November 2020. Speaking about the impact of losing both caregivers, the former Strictly Come Dancing contestant explained that she feels disconnected from the foundational figures who shaped her identity.

Reflecting on a Lifelong Support System

Reflecting on the emotional toll, Akudolu described her parents as her rocks and primary role models throughout her life and career. She noted that their unconditional love and guidance built the core of who she is today.

“I lost a lot of myself when I lost my mum, and now I’ve lost more,” Akudolu said. “These are the two caregivers, people that have been the one constant in my life. They are my rocks; they are my role models. My dad was the first man who loved me. My mum obviously is the same. And they were nurturers, and they made me who I am. And now they’ve gone.”

She also highlighted the small, everyday moments of grief, noting the sudden realization that she can no longer share simple updates or photographs with them.

Navigating Public Grief and Tributes

Following her father’s death, Akudolu took to Instagram on August 3 to share the news with her followers. She posted a heartfelt tribute remembering her dad as an unintentionally funny man and thanking the staff at the Margaret Centre at Whipps Cross Hospital for caring for him.

The announcement drew an outpouring of support from fans and celebrity peers alike, including condolences from Beverly Knight, EastEnders star Diane Parrish, Baroness Floella Benjamin, Dermot O’Leary, and Lisa Snowdon.

While she appreciated the kind messages, Akudolu admitted that public mourning can occasionally become overwhelming. She explained that sharing the news publicly was a deliberate choice to inform everyone at once and prevent constant questioning about her father’s health status.

Finding Comfort in Dreams and Memories

As she navigates the grieving process, Akudolu looks to memories and dreams for a continued connection to her parents. She shared that her mother frequently visits her in dreams, while her father has appeared only once so far in a brief encounter.

“My mum’s in my dreams a lot. My dad is yet to appear. He has appeared once. It was very brief, but I need him to appear so we can talk, like I do with my mum,” she said.

Conceding that losing both parents “freaking sucks,” Akudolu remains focused on continuing to live and love, drawing comfort from the belief that Raphael and Maria are still with her in spirit.
