FX has officially launched Season 2 of its critically acclaimed Tulsa-set drama The Lowdown, kicking off the new chapter with a two-episode premiere on Wednesday, October 14, at 9 p.m. ET. Created by Sterlin Harjo, the eight-episode sophomore season brings back Ethan Hawke as resident citizen journalist and self-described “truthstorian” Lee Raybon, alongside a freshly expanded ensemble cast featuring high-profile additions.
What Happens in The Lowdown Season 2?
Season 2 picks up immediately following the fallout of Lee Raybon’s investigation into the death of Dale Washberg, a harrowing case from the first season that ultimately earns him a local citizen journalist award. True to form, Lee struggles to process success and self-medicates right before the ceremony. He delivers an unfiltered speech that catches the attention of Ginger, a brilliant and brash public defender played by Emmy winner Betty Gilpin.
Ginger pulls Lee into a brand-new, highly dangerous investigation after one of her clients inexplicably vanishes from the state penitentiary. As Lee digs deeper alongside the Heartland Press-where Marty (Keith David) now serves as managing editor-the case exposes deep-seated corruption among Tulsa’s wealthy elite. At the same time, Lee must rely on Johnny (Rafael Casal), a jujitsu-trained dentist married to Lee’s ex, Samantha (Kaniehtiio Horn), while attempting to balance time with his increasingly independent teenage daughter, Francis (Ryan Kiera Armstrong).
New Additions to the Cast
In addition to Betty Gilpin’s arrival as Ginger, Season 2 introduces Academy Award winner Tommy Lee Jones as Lee Raybon Senior. The unexpected appearance of Lee’s estranged grifter father throws the household into chaos, particularly because Lee had previously told Francis that her grandfather was dead. Other returning favorites include Michael Hitchc**k, while new recurring guest stars like Martha Plimpton as Sheriff Vela Thorne further round out the gritty Oklahoma landscape.
