Coast Guard Rescues Woman After 20 Hours at Sea Near Greece

A 44-year-old Salvadoran woman was rescued alive from the Ionian Sea near the Greek island of Zakynthos. She spent roughly 20 hours in the water clinging to a lifebuoy, according to the Hellenic Coast Guard. The passenger went overboard from Royal Caribbean’s Odyssey of the Seas while the cruise ship sailed southwest of Zakynthos.

The intense search and rescue operation involved multiple assets. These included Greek Coast Guard boats, a navy helicopter, and nearby commercial vessels. The breakthrough came when the Madeira-flagged cargo ship MSC Rossella III joined the coordinated search. The crew spotted the woman conscious inside a bright orange circular lifebuoy in the dark waters.

Rescue Operation Details

Authorities reported that an emergency alert was triggered shortly after the incident on Friday morning. The Odyssey of the Seas initially paused its journey to search the area before resuming its course. Meanwhile, local rescue crews and a passing freighter combed the open waters.

Once the MSC Rossella III located the victim, a Greek Coast Guard patrol boat arrived to retrieve her safely using ropes. Rescuers administered first aid before transporting her to the port of Katakolo. From there, an EKAB ambulance transferred her to Pyrgos General Hospital for medical evaluation and treatment for hypothermia.

Statements and Investigation

A Hellenic Coast Guard spokesperson told Agence France-Presse that the woman explained her actions during preliminary checks. She stated that she “wanted to disembark.” Local authorities and prosecutors ordered further assessments, including a psychiatric evaluation, to determine the exact circumstances of how she entered the water.

Data from the Cruise Lines International Association indicates that going-overboard incidents remain rare. Survival rates are historically low due to the immense challenges of locating individuals in vast open waters. Industry experts praised the collaborative international response and the sharp lookout kept by the crew of the MSC Rossella III for achieving a rare and successful rescue.
