Sumerian Pictures has officially released the trailer for Josephine, an upcoming psychological thriller directed by Beth de Araújo. The film explores the heavy emotional and psychological aftermath experienced by an eight-year-old girl who accidentally witnesses a violent crime while visiting Golden Gate Park.
Newcomer Mason Reeves stars in the title role as Josephine. Her traumatic encounter triggers a series of defensive, violent behavioral shifts as she tries to navigate her reality. This sudden transformation creates intense friction within her family structure. Her parents, portrayed by prominent actors Channing Tatum and Gemma Chan, must desperately seek justice while struggling to restore a sense of safety and security at home.
Plot Dynamics and Family Fallout
According to the film’s production synopsis, the emotional fallout from the incident permeates every aspect of the household. As Josephine attempts to protect herself through increasingly concerning actions, her parents face immense relationship pressure. The narrative highlights the complex consequences families endure when trying to rebuild trust and normalcy after an unexpected tragedy.
The psychological depth of the story builds on director Beth de Araújo’s established style of exploring systemic tension, human behavior, and the ripple effects of violence on vulnerable individuals.
Festival Success and Fall Theatrical Release
Josephine marks the second feature film directed by de Araújo. The project generated significant industry buzz during its initial festival run, premiering earlier at the 2026 Sundance Film Festival. During the festival circuit, the thriller earned critical praise, taking home both the Audience Award and the Grand Jury Prize.
Following its successful festival debut, Sumerian Pictures has scheduled Josephine for a nationwide theatrical release this fall. Audiences and critics anticipate how the film will perform commercially following its celebrated independent foundation.
