How Taylor Sheridan Recruited Harrison Ford for 1923 at Age 80

After nearly six decades in the film industry, iconic actor Harrison Ford took on his first major regular television role in the Paramount+ series 1923. The historic casting decision followed a pivotal, face-to-face meeting with creator Taylor Sheridan at his ranch near Weatherford, Texas, before a single page of the script had even been written.

A High-Stakes Ranch Meeting Near Weatherford

In December 2022, details emerged regarding how Sheridan successfully recruited Ford to anchor the Yellowstone prequel as Jacob Dutton. Ford, who was 80 years old at the time, flew down to Texas on his own plane to meet with the writer and director. Sheridan relied heavily on personal persuasion rather than traditional pitch meetings or script evaluations.

Recalling the encounter to Deadline, Sheridan explained his direct approach:

“I poured about two bottles of wine down him. He said yes. I got him on the plane as fast as I could, closed the deal and said, send me the next one.”

Ford noted that the setting gave him a firsthand look at the creator’s vision. “I was there doing some helicopter training in Fort Worth and I had a chance to get to the ranch and sit down and spend an evening with Taylor,” Ford explained in a promotional video for Paramount+. “That’s where I heard the story. There was no script, and I met Taylor for the first time. And I got a sense of his ambition for the project.”

Trusting the Creative Vision Without a Script

Commitment before reading scripts became a unifying theme for the show’s top-tier leads. Co-star Helen Mirren, who joined the project as Cara Dutton, echoed a similar sentiment when speaking to The Hollywood Reporter in December 2022.

“We didn’t read scripts before we signed up. Neither Harrison nor I,” Mirren confirmed. She further noted that knowing Ford was attached to the series provided an immediate sense of quality and confidence. Once the scripts were finally delivered, Ford’s reaction proved instantaneous. According to Sheridan, the actor called him back and stated, “It’s f***ing perfect. When do we start?”

A Major Career Shift at Age 80

Ford’s entry into the television landscape marked a major shift for an actor whose career began in 1966 with a minor part in Dead Heat on a Merry-Go-Round. Across nearly 60 years in film, Ford starred in more than 70 movies generating over $9 billion at the worldwide box office, including legendary franchises like Star Wars and Indiana Jones.

Despite his decades-long dedication to cinema, Ford embraced the shift toward serialized television. “I’m always interested in working with new things,” Ford said. “It doesn’t seem to me that there’s a terrible amount of difference between movies and ambitious television projects anymore.”

Alongside his work on 1923, Ford also joined the Apple TV+ comedy series Shrinking as Dr. Paul Rhoades, showcasing a newfound enthusiasm for regular television work. For Sheridan, securing cinema royalty like Ford and Mirren aligned with a broader strategy of enlisting legendary film actors to lead his expanding television universe, which also included Kevin Costner in Yellowstone and Sylvester Stallone in Tulsa King.
