Illinois law enforcement authorities detailed a thwarted mass shooting plot Thursday, revealing that a 19-year-old Palatine man allegedly planned an attack on a major Hindu temple in Aurora, entered its parking lot with an AR-style rifle, and was arrested after a vigilant coworker alerted police.

The suspect, identified as 19-year-old Alexandros Paporakis, faces terrorism-related charges, threats, and unlawfully possessing a short-barreled rifle. Investigators stated that Paporakis acted alone following a period of radicalization involving white supremacist ideologies and Nazi symbolism.

According to Palatine Police Chief Bill Nord, authorities tracked a red Acura RDX registered to Paporakis entering the parking lot of the targeted Hindu temple in Aurora at approximately 12:25 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 11. Surveillance footage captured the vehicle exiting the premises 13 minutes later, at 12:38 p.m., before heading back toward the suspect’s residence in Palatine.

Prosecutors and investigators disclosed that Paporakis worked at a Taco Bell in Arlington Heights. A coworker came forward to police on Sunday after reporting that Paporakis regularly made racist comments, identified as a white supremacist, discussed armed conflicts, and explicitly described plans to attack the prominent Aurora house of worship.

The Manifesto and Weapon Recovery

During a search of Paporakis’ Palatine home, where he lived with his mother, law enforcement officers recovered an AR-style rifle without a serial number, loaded magazines, hundreds of rounds of ammunition, a tactical vest, a gas can, and materials featuring Nazi symbolism.

Investigators also recovered an eight-page document titled “Why I Fought: A.K.A. (Aurora Shooter’s Manifesto).” Prosecutors stated the manifesto contained intense hatred targeting people of Indian ancestry, Jewish individuals, and Black people, labeling them as subhumans and outlining a plan to murder as many people as possible. The document also noted Paporakis’ extensive research into the layout of the Hindu temple.

Coworker accounts shared with investigators indicated that Paporakis claimed his rifle jammed when he attempted to fire it from his vehicle outside the temple, sending a video file showing the weapon failing to function properly. Federal and local authorities are still verifying where the video was captured and whether an active shooting attempt occurred on site.

Community and Congressional Response

The thwarted plot has sent shockwaves through local communities and national political circles. U.S. Representative Raja Krishnamoorthi revealed that he and his family, including his parents who had spent the entire day at the temple, were present at the Balaji Temple during the time of the suspect’s reconnaissance. The date coincided with the beginning of Sharad Navratri, a major holiday that drew larger crowds than usual.

“My family was there. My parents had been there the entire day and little did we know someone with such sinister intent was sitting in the parking lot lying in wait,” Rep. Krishnamoorthi said during a press conference. “We are very fortunate that something much, much worse did not happen.”

Elected officials, interfaith coalitions, and advocacy groups, including CAIR-Chicago and local Aurora leadership, praised the swift intervention of law enforcement and the quick thinking of the coworker who sounded the alarm. Aurora Mayor John Laesch and local alderpersons condemned the rise of hateful ideologies, emphasizing community solidarity and religious freedom.

Ongoing Federal Investigation

The FBI’s Chicago Field Office, along with the Chicago Regional Computer Forensic Laboratory, is examining electronic devices recovered from Paporakis’ home to gather further evidence. Law enforcement agencies are reviewing the case to determine whether additional federal hate crime charges will be filed against the suspect.

Paporakis is currently being held in custody. His next scheduled court appearance is set for October 30 at the Rolling Meadows courthouse.
