British actress and comedian Miranda Hart is officially making her television return, joining the cast of BBC’s The Celebrity Traitors. The 53-year-old entertainer is heading to Ardross Castle in the Scottish Highlands for the reality competition series, marking a major milestone after years out of the spotlight due to severe health challenges.
Known for her BBC sitcom Miranda, the comedian’s return comes after she detailed a 30-year health battle in her 2024 autobiography, I Haven’t Been Entirely Honest with You.
Overcoming a Decades-Long Health Battle
In her memoir, Miranda revealed that it took medical professionals 33 years to discover she was suffering from Lyme disease, a bacterial infection she likely contracted while living in the United States during her teens. Her symptoms were initially mislabeled as agoraphobia, an anxiety disorder, before she was diagnosed with Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (ME), also known as chronic fatigue syndrome.
At the height of her illness, the chronic exhaustion and flu-like symptoms left her housebound and bedbound for years, forcing her to step away from the entertainment industry. Describing her experience of making her sitcom while unwell, Miranda noted it felt like walking through treacle and that she lost her usual joy for life.
“I was housebound and bedbound for years,” Miranda shared. “I didn’t have a job, I didn’t have a social life. I didn’t have any responsibilities or identities.”
Stepping Back into the Spotlight on The Celebrity Traitors
Following a gradual recovery, Miranda feels well enough to take on a fresh physical and psychological challenge. When approached by producers for series two of The Celebrity Traitors, she knew it was the right project for her comeback.
“My decision making in life generally, and certainly work, is follow the joy,” Miranda explained. “I haven’t done much TV work for a long time, having only recently come out of long-term ill health issues. When I was offered this, my whole body sort of relaxed, I smiled, and I just wanted to jump about like a schoolgirl with joy.”
However, she remains realistic about the physical toll the castle missions-which involve team-building tasks and high-stakes strategy-might take on her body.
“I’m still living with elements of ME, and that brings fatigue and pain to manage, but I have come to a point where I feel well enough to step out,” she added. “When you live with a chronic illness, it’s invisible, so people don’t know that you’re sitting there in pain. But then it reminds you that everybody’s got their thing.”
An All-Star Cast in the Scottish Highlands
Miranda is joined at Ardross Castle by an eclectic group of 21 famous faces for the game of deception, trust, and betrayal hosted by Claudia Winkleman. The 2026 lineup features music icons Jerry Hall and James Blunt, broadcasters Amol Rajan and Professor Hannah Fry, actors Michael Sheen, Bella Ramsey, and Richard E Grant, alongside comedians James Acaster, Joe Lycett, and Romesh Ranganathan.
True to her comedic roots, Miranda has embraced the lighter side of the experience. After fans jokingly dared her to recreate her signature sitcom move-galloping through the corridors-she humorously accepted the challenge, telling interviewers she might just have to gallop when nobody is watching.
Fans can watch Miranda Hart’s return to television when The Celebrity Traitors premieres on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.
