Actress Olivia Thirlby is bringing a sharp, sarcastic new presence to Edgewater in Season 5 of the hit CBS drama Fire Country. Thirlby joins the cast as Cecilia Jade “CJ” Ryan, a decorated urban firefighter who arrives in town after spending six months on the road. Her introduction injects a distinct comedic edge and a fresh perspective into the established emergency response ensemble.
The fifth season premiered on October 9, 2026, opening with the episode “Founders’ Day,” where a catastrophic sinkhole opens beneath Main Street. It is during this chaotic period that CJ crosses paths with Bode Donovan, played by series star and co-creator Max Thieriot. What begins as a tense, sus**cious encounter in the woods eventually evolves into an unexpected partnership.
Meeting Bode and Finding a New Purpose
In her initial introduction, CJ encounters Bode while camping, prompting him to warn her about dry winds and extreme fire danger. True to her character, CJ greets his warnings with skepticism and demands identification, noting the Pennsylvania license plate on her car. According to Thirlby, her character carries significant baggage and shame from a massive betrayal at her previous fire station.
Despite her initial walls, Bode quickly recognizes her talent and asks for her help to establish a local volunteer firefighting crew. Speaking on the dynamic, Thirlby noted that Bode serves as a safe space for CJ to finally open up about her past. Inspired by his deep passion and commitment to the community, CJ decides to stay in Edgewater, finding renewed love for a profession she thought she had left behind.
A Unique Voice for Station 42
Showrunners and writers crafted CJ to stand apart from previous characters on the procedural drama. Thirlby has praised the writers for giving her a lively, sassy, and salty voice that introduces rare humor to the intense world of Station 42 and Three Rock.
Stepping into the role also required intense physical preparation. Thirlby noted that wearing heavy turnouts, helmets, and self-contained breathing apparatuses (SCBA) added a demanding layer to production. Running, climbing, and executing high-stakes stunts in gear that makes up a significant percentage of her body weight gave the actress a newfound appreciation for real-world emergency personnel.
What Lies Ahead in Season 5
As Season 5 unfolds across its 13-episode run, viewers will see CJ grapple with deep-seated trust issues. She learns to rely on her new community both emotionally and physically. Alongside her burgeoning partnership with Bode, CJ forms a sweet, supportive bond with Jake Crawford (Jordan Calloway) and spends her downtime enjoying burgers and fries at Smokey’s, the social hub of Edgewater.
With Eric Guggenheim stepping in as showrunner for Season 5 and upcoming crossover events planned with Sheriff Country, CJ Ryan’s journey from a reluctant drifter to an integral piece of Edgewater’s firefighting family remains one of the season’s major narrative arcs.
