The New York Police Department has launched an intensive manhunt for a suspect following a fatal shooting at a Midtown Manhattan subway station on Saturday afternoon, October 17, 2026. The incident, which stemmed from an argument between two men on a platform, prompted a significant emergency response and major public transit disruptions across multiple lines.

According to the NYPD, the shooting occurred at approximately 12:21 p.m. on the northbound E train platform of the 53rd Street and Seventh Avenue station. The location serves heavy commuter traffic across the B, D, and E lines. Investigators stated that an initial verbal dispute between two individuals escalated rapidly into gunfire, with the suspect opening fire before fleeing the scene.

The victim, an unidentified man believed to be in his 30s, sustained a critical gunshot wound to the chest. Responding officers from the Midtown North Precinct and Transit District 1 administered aid at the scene alongside emergency medical services. Paramedics rushed the victim to Bellevue Hospital, where he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.

Manhunt and Suspect Description Released

Police have released surveillance photographs of the suspect in an effort to generate public tips. Investigators describe the gunman as wearing a distinct red tracksuit or red pants, a black puffer vest, a black face mask or balaclava, and black-and-white sneakers while carrying a backpack.

Following the shooting, the suspect fled the station on foot, heading northbound along Seventh Avenue. Law enforcement officials emphasized that the encounter did not appear to be a random act of violence. An NYPD spokesperson noted at the scene that the incident appeared targeted between the two individuals involved.

Transit Disruptions and Official Responses

The active crime scene investigation caused widespread delays and service alterations across the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) network. C, D, and E trains bypassed the Seventh Avenue station in both directions for hours, while E trains were rerouted along segments of the F line. Commuters also experienced residual delays on A, C, and F lines.

MTA Chief of Security Michael Kemper condemned the violence, reiterating the transit agency’s stance against firearms in the subway system. “This was evidently a dispute between two individuals that ended tragically,” Kemper said in a statement, adding that the MTA coordinated closely with the NYPD from the earliest minutes of the investigation to retrieve platform and train car surveillance footage.

Elected officials and local leaders also expressed alarm over the shooting. District 3 Councilman Carl Wilson released a statement calling the incident deeply disturbing, noting that thousands of New Yorkers rely on the Seventh Avenue station daily.
