DC Studios has officially unveiled the first artwork for its upcoming animated series Mister Miracle. The image offers fans a first look at the iconic villain Darkseid and his military forces within the new DC Universe. Developed for HBO Max, the eight-episode production is scheduled to premiere in 2028 and adapts Tom King’s acclaimed comic book run.
James Gunn, co-CEO of DC Studios, shared the promotional artwork on X following major casting announcements. Josh Hutcherson has been cast as Scott Free, while Mackenzie Davis will star alongside him as Big Barda. The narrative focuses on the duo as they attempt to break free from the oppressive legacy of Darkseid’s rule over the fiery planet Apokolips.
What the First Look Reveals About Darkseid
In the newly released promotional image, Darkseid appears as a massive, intimidating silhouette positioned in the background. He stands partly obscured by a bright light, watching over approaching troops as they advance toward Scott Free and Big Barda.
The artwork also highlights a contingent of armed warriors carrying heavy melee weapons marked with Darkseid’s signature Omega symbol. The soldiers wear distinct helmets that hint at a design crossover or connection to New Genesis. DC Studios has not yet confirmed their exact identity or specific role within the series.
Production Details and Canon in the New DCU
Tom King, the acclaimed writer behind the source material, is directly serving as showrunner for the animated adaptation. The series is confirmed to be fully canon to James Gunn’s broader DCU continuity. This sets a visual and narrative precedent for how cosmic elements of the Fourth World will be handled moving forward.
With an expected release window of 2028, production on Mister Miracle is well underway. Additional casting details regarding Darkseid and other key figures from Apokolips and New Genesis are expected to be announced by DC Studios in the coming months.
