Kyle Francis Kennedy, an educator, dedicated advocate, and granddaughter of Robert F. Kennedy and Ethel Kennedy, passed away at the age of 42. According to an online obituary, she died peacefully on September 21 at her home in Westwood, Massachusetts. The official cause and manner of her death have not been disclosed, and family services were held privately.

Born in Washington, D.C., on July 6, 1984, Kyle was the daughter of Michael Kennedy-the sixth of Robert and Ethel Kennedy’s 11 children-and Victoria Denise Gifford. Her grandfather was the late NFL star Frank Gifford, and her stepmother is television personality Kathie Lee Gifford. Kyle was only 13 years old when her father tragically died on New Year’s Eve in 1997 in a skiing accident in Aspen, Colorado.

Education and Career in Early Childhood Education

Kyle spent most of her life in Massachusetts, building a career rooted in early childhood education and literacy. She attended Milton Academy, where she excelled academically and earned recognition for her achievements in Latin. She then attended Georgetown University, majoring in history. A transformative semester abroad in Florence, Italy, fostered a lifelong appreciation for Tuscan Renaissance art and a talent for making pasta entirely from scratch.

Following her undergraduate studies, Kyle pursued advanced degrees to expand her impact in the classroom. She earned a Master of Science in Early Education from Pace University and a Master of Education in Education Policy and Management from the Harvard University Graduate School of Education.

Her career in public service began when she joined Teach for America, spending two years teaching in New York City public schools. From there, she became an active advocate for equitable elementary education and charter schooling. She collaborated with technology companies focused on curriculum reform and worked closely as a coach for educators instructing young students.

Known for a fierce competitive streak, Kyle frequently outran peers on soccer pitches, lacrosse fields, and playgrounds. As an adult, she discovered a passion for long-distance running. In 2019, she completed the Boston Marathon during a torrential downpour, beating her late father’s personal marathon time by 20 minutes.

Personal Life, Tributes, and Disability Advocacy

In August 2012, Kyle married Liam Kerr. The couple welcomed twins Conor and Josephine in 2014, though infant Josephine tragically passed away just days after birth-a loss Kyle carried closely for the rest of her life. They later welcomed a second son, Declan, in 2016. While their marriage eventually ended, the obituary notes Kerr as her former husband.

In 2020, Kyle experienced a severe spinal cord injury that resulted in long-term paralysis and significant medical hurdles. Despite these profound physical challenges, she retained her sharp wit and determination. She shifted a portion of her advocacy work toward disability rights, even testifying at the Massachusetts State House during a crucial hearing regarding discrimination in healthcare for individuals living with disabilities.

Kyle is survived by her sons, Conor (12) and Declan (10); her mother, Victoria; her brother Michael and his wife Mary, along with their children McKie and Quinn; and her sister Rory and her husband David, along with their children Jack and Caleb. She was predeceased by her father, Michael, and her infant daughter, Josie.
