Michael Sheen Reveals He Has Given Away Nearly All His Wealth

Welsh actor Michael Sheen has revealed that he has given away nearly all the money he has earned throughout his extensive career. He described a longstanding indifference to material wealth. The 57-year-old star discussed his unconventional approach to finances in a recent interview with Saga magazine, reflecting on how his core priorities have remained consistent since he was 18 years old.

Sheen, who currently appears on the BBC series The Celebrity Traitors, explained that his lifetime earnings have largely gone toward giving money away, whether through deliberate choices or accidental circumstances. Despite his generosity, he emphasized that his lack of attachment to material possessions does not mean he neglects practical responsibilities for his loved ones.

“At 18, I didn’t care whether I had money or not,” Sheen told Saga magazine. “I wasn’t living in poverty, but I made do with what I had. As with many things in my life, I’ve gone away and then come back home, back to the point where I started.”

The actor added, “I’ve been very lucky that I’ve been able to earn a lot of money, but either on purpose or accidentally, I’ve ended up giving pretty much all of it away.”

Prioritizing Family and a Not-For-Profit Philosophy

While Sheen maintains that he “couldn’t care less about material things,” he drew a firm line regarding the financial security and stability of his family. The actor shares daughter Lily Mo Sheen, 27, with actress Kate Beckinsale, as well as daughters Lyra, six, and Mabli, four, with his partner Anna Lundberg.

“I want to make sure my family are all right and we’ve got a roof over our heads and all the rest of it, but I do feel the same way at 57 as I did at 18 about this,” Sheen said. “I never would have anticipated that.”

Sheen’s philanthropic actions match his stated philosophy. He has previously referred to himself as a “not-for-profit” actor, having sold property to help fund a homelessness project in Wales. In a previous instance of anonymous generosity, he utilized £100,000 of his personal funds to help clear the debts of struggling strangers.

Reflecting on Parenthood and Maturing in the Public Eye

Beyond his financial outlook, Sheen reflected on how aging and fatherhood have fundamentally shifted his perspective on life. Having returned to live in Wales and increased his involvement in stage theatre, the actor noted that becoming a parent remains a defining transformational experience.

“For all it was a rollercoaster ride and for all my failings, it just changes you so much,” Sheen shared. “My experience of life is completely different for having been a parent.”

He also expressed gratitude for retaining his ambition while shedding the insecurities of his younger years. “When I was a young ‘un, thinking about people who I saw as really old, like over 30, I used to think the tragedy would be to lose your ambition and your desire to change the world,” he said. “I realise now that’s not what goes on at all. You can hold on to those desires. I still have them as keenly, if not more so.”
