Great British Bake Off Eliminates Yannis After Dessert Week

October 21, 2026 3 min read 0 comments

The tension reached a high point in the iconic white tent as The Great British Bake Off returned to Channel 4 on October 20, 2026, for Dessert Week. Judges Paul Hollywood and Nigella Lawson put the remaining contestants through three grueling pudding challenges, which ultimately concluded with Dr. Yannis Ali becoming the fifth baker to leave the competition.

The episode tested the bakers with an unprecedented format right from the start. For the signature challenge, contestants prepared eight individual self-saucing puddings under a unique staggered-start rule. Gary began first, while 28-year-old paediatric doctor Yannis waited until last. Yannis opted for apple strudel-inspired flavors, but the execution fell short, with judge Nigella Lawson describing his puddings as gummy. Meanwhile, Connie stood out by earning a coveted Hollywood Handshake for her chocolate orange self-saucing puddings.

Bread and Butter Puddings and Retro Showstoppers

For the technical challenge, Nigella Lawson introduced ingredients from The Gingham Shrouded Pantry, tasking the bakers with creating their own distinct versions of a traditional bread and butter pudding. Gary secured first place in the technical rankings, while Moyin finished last and Yannis landed in seventh place.

The final hurdle was a demanding retro dessert trolley showstopper. Contestants presented a collection of individually portioned classic treats featuring at least three different puddings and a baked element. Yannis assembled a trolley consisting of a Black Forest gateau, sticky toffee pudding, and a queen of puddings. However, the judges criticized the display, noting that his cream had split and the sticky toffee puddings were excessively dense.

Yannis Reflects on His Exit and Juggling Shifts

Following the assessment of all three rounds, co-hosts Noel Fielding and Alison Hammond delivered the results. Connie was crowned Star Baker, and Yannis was told he would be leaving the tent.

Reflecting on his departure, Yannis shared an honest perspective on balancing the competition with his medical career. “It was definitely bittersweet. I was heartbroken to leave my Bake Off family, but there was also a strange sense of relief,” he said. “Filming incredibly long hours in a challenging tent while juggling my full-time job, often doing 12-hour shifts and nights was exhausting, so my body was definitely ready for a break.”

He added that a trip to Spain for his best friend’s wedding the following week helped soften the blow of elimination. Looking back at his time on the show, Yannis admitted that the technical challenges were his greatest trial, noting that he “aged approximately five years during every Technical.” Despite the pressure, he expressed immense pride in reaching five weeks in the competition and highlighted getting to hug both Paul Hollywood and Nigella Lawson as his standout memory.

Looking Ahead in the Tent

Yannis follows Danni, Shannon, Molly, and Nikki out of the competition as the 2026 series reaches its midway point. The Great British Bake Off continues next Tuesday at 8 pm on Channel 4, where the remaining seven bakers will tackle pastry week.
