Senator John Kennedy of Louisiana has called on President Donald Trump to deliver a nationwide address explaining the ongoing military involvement in Iran. Speaking on national television, the senator emphasized the need for clarity regarding U.S. objectives, the reasons for entering the conflict, and the ultimate strategy for resolution.
According to Kennedy, the current military campaign has severely impacted Iran’s security framework, but complications remain. He specifically pointed to the partial closure of the Strait of Hormuz by Iran, which has driven up global oil prices and increased financial pressure on American households.
“The truth is, if you’re fair-minded at all, Iran is a sucking chest wound, and the world is safer for it,” Kennedy stated during his appearance. However, he noted that the partial closure of the vital shipping lane is directly affecting the cost of living.
Evaluating Military Options and Ground Troops
When discussing the path forward, Kennedy laid out two primary choices for the administration: reach a settlement to fully reopen the Strait of Hormuz or escalate the military campaign. Despite these options, the senator firmly opposed deploying American ground troops to the region.
“I would not send in troops,” Kennedy said. “We could send in troops and we could open the strait. But once you send them in, you’ve got to leave them there. And that creates a whole new host of problems.”
Kennedy suggested that if President Trump does not give the address himself, key members of his national security team-such as Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Dan Caine-should step forward to explain the administration’s rationale and path to exiting the conflict.
Defending Budget Cuts and Federal Spending
In addition to foreign policy, Kennedy addressed domestic matters, defending the Trump administration’s decision to cancel nearly $1 billion in congressionally approved funds. He pushed back against criticism from fellow Republican Senator Susan Collins of Maine, who argued that the clawbacks undermined Congress’s constitutional power of the purse.
“I love Susan like a taco, but she’s wrong,” Kennedy remarked, expressing support for cutting spending he views as wasteful, while maintaining distinctions regarding specific programs like National Institutes of Health grants.
As the political landscape shifts toward upcoming midterms, Kennedy reiterated that everyday Americans remain far more focused on household expenses and the broader cost of living than partisan political debates.
