Television presenter Matt Baker recently opened up about a frightening medical emergency that left him hospitalized on a bathroom floor during a work trip abroad. The 48-year-old Countryfile host suffered severe anaphylactic shock after unknowingly triggering a hidden, hereditary pork allergy while visiting Nuremberg, Germany.
The incident occurred in the early hours of the morning while Baker was traveling to collect a donkey for a segment on the BBC show Blue Peter, which he presented from 1999 to 2006. According to the broadcaster, he had spent the previous day exploring a local market and sampling various pork-based foods and drinks.
Recounting the ordeal on The Harry Hill Show, Baker explained that consuming such a large amount of pork in one sitting ultimately “tipped him over the edge.” He recalled, “Thank goodness my then girlfriend, who’s now my wife, came with us because I had an anaphylactic shock on the bathroom floor from pork.”
Following the sudden crisis, Baker received treatment at a local hospital. Despite the severity of the late-night medical emergency, his work commitments meant he had to return straight back to filming the following day.
Reflecting on the diagnosis afterward, Baker realized the condition runs in his family. He noted that his mother has always been unable to eat pork, though he had never connected the hereditary trait to himself-having previously enjoyed foods like pork crackling without issue. He has entirely avoided pork products since the incident.
The health scare is one of several personal challenges the presenter has spoken about publicly in recent years. Baker has previously opened up about managing ADHD and navigating dyslexia, noting how the latter condition has heavily impacted his experience reading from autocues during live television broadcasts.
