A member of Abu Dhabi’s royal family has received a two-year community order after admitting to a child neglect charge stemming from an incident in west London. Mahrah Al Nahyan, 32, was found unconscious beside a three-year-old child who was barefoot and playing near moving traffic, prompting immediate intervention from members of the public.

According to reports presented at Southwark Crown Court, the incident occurred in June. Passersby noticed the unattended toddler near the road and stepped in to protect the child before emergency services arrived. Crown Prosecution Service footage showed Al Nahyan sitting on a sidewalk with her head slumped against railings outside a property.

Court Details and Witness Accounts

Prosecutor Rio Pahlavanpour told the court that Al Nahyan remained unresponsive for approximately 30 minutes. When she eventually regained consciousness, eyewitnesses reported that she questioned the intervention of bystanders, asking, “This is not a slaughterhouse. Why do you care so much? Why are you so worried?”

Al Nahyan is part of the ruling family of Abu Dhabi through marriage and receives a monthly allowance of approximately $10,500. Following her guilty plea to one count of child neglect, Southwark Crown Court handed down a two-year community order featuring a mandatory rehabilitation requirement. Additionally, she was ordered to pay a fine worth roughly $6,500 alongside $1,300 in court costs.

Defense and Rehabilitation Efforts

Defense attorney Stephen Vullo stated in court that Al Nahyan had not consumed substances on the day of the incident itself, but was instead exhausted from prior use. Vullo noted that his client has since sought treatment at the Priory center, a drug treatment facility in Woking outside London, and has remained clean.

“The immediate future is she intends to complete all of the steps of a three-month program which will come to an end at the end of this month,” Vullo told the court. “Her plan after that is to rent a property in the Guildford area and become a day patient there, where she will attend Narcotics Anonymous.” Vullo added that Al Nahyan recognizes she made a grave mistake.

Judge’s Remarks on Public Intervention

Presiding Judge Justice Jeremy Johnson rebuked Al Nahyan for her actions, highlighting the severe dangers the toddler faced during the incident.

By leaving [the toddler] to play barefoot in the street while under the influence of drugs, you showed a recklessness and disregard for [the child’s] safety. On one occasion, they ran towards the road while chasing a piece of paper until a member of the public contained [the toddler]. But for the intervention of strangers, there was a serious risk they would be seriously injured or worse.

The judge emphasized that the child could easily have run away, become lost, or faced harm from strangers while Al Nahyan and another companion remained unconscious in the public thoroughfare.
