Greece made history on Sunday by claiming a 1-0 victory over Germany in a UEFA Nations League Group Two match at the WWK Arena in Augsburg. The result marks Greece’s first-ever win against Germany, following seven defeats and three draws in a rivalry dating back to 1960.
The loss also handed manager Jürgen Klopp his first defeat in his home debut at the helm of the German national team. Klopp had made five changes to his starting lineup following a 1-1 draw against the Netherlands just days earlier, including handing a start to Hoffenheim forward Bambasé Conté.
Despite dominating possession throughout the fixture, Germany struggled to turn their chances into goals. Greek goalkeeper Konstantinos Tzolakis put on a stellar performance, denying attempts from Karim Adeyemi, Serge Gnabry, Conté, and a dangerous second-half free-kick from Joshua Kimmich. Out of 14 total shots by the hosts, 5 hit the target, but none managed to cross the goal line.
The decisive moment arrived in the 74th minute. Midfielder Dimitrios Kourbelis broke the deadlock by firing a low shot from the edge of the box that took a heavy deflection off Joshua Kimmich, completely wrong-footing goalkeeper Alexander Nübel and settling into the bottom left corner.
Following the match, German defender Jonathan Tah emphasized the importance of team unity moving forward. “I think the important thing is that we stand together and that won’t change,” Tah said.
