DENVER – Los Angeles Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford threw his 33rd career interception returned for a touchdown on Sunday, September 27, 2026. This set an NFL record during a 30-26 loss to the Denver Broncos. The historic turnover occurred late in the fourth quarter at Empower Field at Mile High, pushing Stafford past Hall of Famer Brett Favre for the most pick-sixes in league history.
A Historic Turnover at Mile High
With 4:49 remaining in the fourth quarter and the Rams holding a 19-16 lead, Denver brought pressure on a blitz. Stafford attempted a pass toward running back Kyren Williams in the flat. Broncos safety Talanoa Hufanga jumped the route, intercepted the pass, and ran 66 yards into the end zone. This turned the Rams’ three-point advantage into a 23-19 deficit.
The play broke a tie with Favre, who threw 32 career pick-sixes. Hall of Famer Dan Marino sits third on the all-time list with 29.
Late-Game Battle and Final Interception
Despite the mistake, Stafford led the Rams on a touchdown drive to briefly reclaim the lead. However, the Broncos responded with a late touchdown drive to move ahead 30-26.
With Los Angeles attempting a final game-winning drive, Hufanga intercepted Stafford once again in the end zone as time expired. This second turnover sealed Denver’s victory and dropped the Rams to a 1-2 record.
Stafford Accepts Responsibility
Following the loss, Stafford took personal responsibility for the turnovers. He analyzed the play that resulted in the record-breaking interception.
“They brought more than we had, I had nobody in the backfield,” Stafford said. “Hufanga did a nice job of fighting through the Y, and I just left it back behind him. I think if I just dirt it we come away with three points.”
Stafford stressed that the offense must make adjustments as the team prepares for its upcoming games.
“We’ve got to be more efficient with some of the stuff we’re doing throwing the football,” Stafford added. “Obviously, I’ve got to be better, and I will be.”
