SMITH GROVE, Ky. – A Kentucky State Police trooper was shot and killed Monday afternoon while on patrol along Interstate 65 in Warren County, triggering a massive statewide manhunt and major highway closures. The fallen officer was identified as Trooper Hayden Phillips, assigned to Post 3 in Bowling Green and Unit 369.
Trooper Phillips, a Barren County resident and graduate of Cadet Class 103, had previously served with the Glasgow Police Department before joining the Kentucky State Police in 2023. Investigators reported that the fatal shooting occurred during a traffic stop near the 38-mile marker on Interstate 65 North.
Statewide Manhunt and Suspect Vehicle Details
Law enforcement agencies across Kentucky are actively searching for the suspect. Authorities have identified the vehicle of interest as a 2025 bluish-gray Honda Civic with an Alabama temporary tag numbered TN018596. The vehicle was last spotted near the 75-mile marker on Interstate 65 North.
Hardin County Chief Deputy David Lee issued a warning to the public regarding the search. “People need to be extremely careful,” Lee stated. “We do not know where he is at, and, in my opinion, he’ll be looking to get rid of that car.” The Hardin County Sheriff’s Office described the suspect as a Black man with dreadlocks tied in a bun on top of his head. Law enforcement considers the suspect armed and dangerous, and they urge anyone who spots the vehicle or individual to call 911 immediately.
