Jersey City House Fire Leaves One Dead and Seven Injured

A fast-moving residential fire in Jersey City claimed the life of a woman and left seven others injured Thursday evening after engulfing a Boyd Avenue home and spreading to adjacent structures, local authorities said.

Emergency crews responded to the multi-alarm blaze at 81 Boyd Avenue at approximately 4:50 p.m. on Thursday. According to officials, the flames rapidly extended to neighboring buildings within the densely packed row-home neighborhood. This forced emergency responders to evacuate multiple surrounding properties and shut down local streets.

Challenging Conditions Hamper Fire Response

Fire officials on the scene noted that extreme interior conditions heavily complicated rescue and firefighting efforts. Jersey City Fire Chief Jack Johnson reported that the entire second floor of the primary structure contained rooms piled roughly five feet high with stored debris and household items. This heavy accumulation made it difficult for crews to navigate the apartment.

“The entire second floor-three rooms-were fully five feet high of debris and I guess stuff that they were storing in the apartment,” Chief Johnson said. “It was hard just to get through the apartment.”

Despite these obstacles, firefighters pushed through the debris to access the upper level. Tragically, a woman was pronounced dead at the scene. Neighbors later recounted hearing desperate calls for help from the upper floor before heavy flames blocked stairwell access.

Casualties and Displaced Residents

Authorities confirmed that seven people sustained injuries during the incident. Four civilians suffered minor injuries, while three firefighters were treated for minor conditions while battling the blaze. PSEG crews drilled into the asphalt on Boyd Avenue to cut off gas lines as police maintained a perimeter around the site.

The Red Cross and local emergency services reported that the intense fire and structural damage displaced six households across several connected row homes, leaving multiple properties temporarily or permanently uninhabitable.

The exact cause of the fatal fire remains unknown. Investigators from local and state agencies are continuing their review of the incident.
