Director Greta Gerwig and Netflix have ignited widespread controversy within Christian communities following the official confirmation that Academy Award-winning actress Meryl Streep will voice the iconic lion Aslan. This decision applies to the upcoming $280 million adaptation of The Chronicles of Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew. The casting has drawn swift condemnation from evangelical leaders, theologians, and fans. These critics argue that altering the vocal portrayal of a character deliberately created as a literary Christ figure is deeply disrespectful to the source material.
The backlash quickly translated into offline and online action. This includes an online petition on Change.org demanding Gerwig’s replacement. Religious commentators have expressed profound confusion and outrage over the creative direction. The film is slated to hit theaters on February 12, 2027, before making its streaming debut on Netflix on April 2, 2027.
Christian Leaders and Fans Slam ‘Woke’ Gender Swap
In C.S. Lewis’s classic literary series, Aslan is a majestic talking lion who serves as the creator and protector of Narnia. Lewis, a devout Christian theologian, intentionally designed the character as an incarnation of Jesus Christ within the fantasy realm. Liam Neeson previously voiced the character in the celebrated 2005-2010 movie trilogy. That trilogy grossed approximately $1.5 billion globally while maintaining male vocal casting.
The choice to cast 77-year-old Meryl Streep to voice a traditionally male character has been heavily criticized as an unnecessary ideological statement. L. David Fairchild, pastor of Cross and Crown in Waxahachie, Texas, lambasted the decision in strong terms. He called it “an act of creative vandalism pretending to be artistic sophistication.”
Similarly, Lutheran commentator and podcaster Liam McCollum argued that Lewis “would’ve hated Gerwig’s deconstruction and subversion of Aslan.” Political commentator Isabel Brown also weighed in heavily on social media. She wrote that casting Streep is “a slap in the face to the genius of Lewis, but also a deliberate mockery of Christianity that is 100% intentional.”
Director Greta Gerwig Defends Her Creative Vision
Greta Gerwig, who previously directed acclaimed projects such as Little Women (2019) and Barbie (2023), defended her artistic choices in an interview with Empire magazine. The director explained that she specifically sought out an actor over the age of 70. She wanted to embody a unique blend of gravitas, hard-earned wisdom, and childlike wonder.
“I wanted someone who was older than 70, so there was a wisdom of experience, but who also had the capacity of fresh wonder, like a child,” Gerwig explained. “And also to be one of the greatest actors to ever do it. That list is not a long one.” Gerwig also revealed that rock legend David Bowie served as a visual and tonal inspiration for her vision of Aslan.
Despite the gender-swapped vocal casting, initial production insights indicate that Aslan will still be referred to using male pronouns within the script. However, this has done little to appease critics. They feel the core symbolic meaning of Lewis’s theological creation has been compromised.
C.S. Lewis’s Intent for Aslan
The controversy has reignited theological debates regarding the exact nature of Aslan in Lewis’s writings. In the book A To Z With C.S. Lewis, author Louis Markos explored how Lewis viewed the character. Markos noted that Lewis insisted Aslan was not merely a passive literary allegory.
“According to his creator, Aslan is not an allegory for Christ but the Christ of Narnia,” Markos wrote. “Were Aslan only an allegory, a mere stand-in for the hero of the Gospels, he would not engage the reader as he does… Aslan is what the second person of the Trinity (God the Son) might have been like had he been incarnated in a magical world of talking animals and living trees.”
As the theatrical release date in early 2027 approaches, industry analysts remain divided. They are unsure whether the vocal casting controversy will hinder the film’s box office potential or simply fuel intense public debate around Netflix’s ambitious new fantasy franchise.
