HBO series co-creator Damon Lindelof recently addressed the creative decisions behind the season finale of Lanterns, shedding light on the shocking conclusion and the ongoing discussions regarding a potential second season for the DC Universe show.
The first season of the gritty, True Detective-inspired sci-fi series concluded with a major narrative twist: the death of veteran Green Lantern Hal Jordan, played by Kyle Chandler. In the finale, Jordan was shot by his girlfriend, Kerry Kane (Kelly Macdonald), in a desperate attempt to cover up the actions of her son, Noah. Following this development, military veteran John Stewart, portrayed by Aaron Pierre, stepped up as an independent Green Lantern using an unauthorized power battery created by Sinestro.
The Creative Vision Behind Season 1’s Ending
Speaking about the narrative structure, Lindelof-who co-created the show alongside sole showrunner Chris Mundy and DC Comics writer Tom King-explained that the team intentionally approached the first outing as a self-contained story. Rather than holding back major plot points for a hypothetical future, the creators wanted viewers to experience a complete, emotionally resonant arc.
When we sat down to build this, the goal was to tell a complete story. We didn’t want to hold back our best ideas for some hypothetical second season. If this is the only eight hours of Lanterns we ever get to make, it has a beginning, a middle, and a very clear end, – Damon Lindelof
Lindelof also emphasized that the writing team wanted to avoid cheap narrative tricks regarding Hal Jordan’s fate. Despite the character’s death in the season one finale, comic canon has frequently explored resurrection and multiversal mechanisms like Parallax, leaving future storytelling pathways open for subsequent writers.
Early Development and Season 2 Discussions
While Lindelof has opted not to return as a writer for a potential sophomore run, he confirmed that preliminary work is already underway at Warner Bros. and HBO. According to Lindelof, showrunner Chris Mundy has assembled an early writers’ room to explore new narrative directions.
- Current Status: Warner Bros. and HBO are holding active discussions regarding a second season renewal.
- Writers’ Room: Chris Mundy has initiated early ideation and brainstorming sessions for upcoming storylines.
- Future Appearances: Aaron Pierre’s John Stewart is already locked in to appear in James Gunn’s upcoming DCU film, Man of Tomorrow.
Although an official second-season greenlight from HBO has not yet been formally announced, the combination of strong viewership, critical acclaim, and active early development points toward a bright future for the cosmic corner of the DC Universe.
