A 21-year-old man died on Monday after suffering severe injuries during an early morning disturbance. The incident involved multiple men near the Duke of Wellington statue in Glasgow city center on Sunday, October 4, 2026.
Emergency responders were dispatched to Royal Exchange Square at approximately 3:05 a.m. following reports of a violent clash. The victim was rushed to a local hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries.
Police Investigation and Arrests Underway
Police Scotland cordoned off the public area connecting Royal Exchange Square with Buchanan Street and Queen Street as investigators gathered evidence. The ongoing police operation forced the temporary closure of the nearby Gallery of Modern Art.
Authorities have confirmed that multiple arrests have been made in connection with the wider disturbance:
- A 19-year-old man was arrested in connection with the disturbance and subsequently released pending further inquiries.
- A 20-year-old man was arrested and charged in connection with an assault on a second 21-year-old victim who sustained minor injuries during the incident. He is scheduled to appear at Glasgow Sheriff Court at a later date.
Investigators stressed that no one has yet been arrested specifically in connection with the death of the 21-year-old victim, and active lines of inquiry remain open.
Appeal for Public Information
Detective Inspector Jonny MacKinnon of Police Scotland issued a statement offering condolences to the victim’s family and appealing directly to the public for assistance.
“Our thoughts are with the family of the man who has died. No one has been arrested in connection with the death of the man at this time and extensive enquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances. Anyone with information who has not already spoken to officers is asked to contact us on 101, quoting incident number 0494 of Sunday, 4 October, 2026.”
Chief Inspector Stephen McManus, local area commander, noted that the incident occurred over a weekend marked by exceptionally high demands on city center policing resources. This weekend included multiple disturbances, assaults, and hate crimes.
Police have urged anyone who witnessed the events or holds relevant mobile phone footage to approach officers on patrol or contact the non-emergency number immediately.
