Wizards of the Coast has announced major updates to Magic: The Gathering booster packs, highlighted by the official return of rare God Packs. These changes begin with the release of the Nauctis: The Sunken Realm set in February 2027, marking the first time God Packs have appeared in regular sets since 2014.
According to publisher details released on October 5, 2026, standard Booster Packs-formerly known as Play Boosters-will feature God Packs at an estimated drop rate of 1 in 1,000 packs. Premium Collector Boosters will house them at a higher frequency of 1 in every 300 packs. Crossover products under the Universes Beyond banner will incorporate the new pack configuration starting in 2028 due to longer production timelines.
What Is Inside the New God Packs?
Originally introduced during the Theros block with Journey into Nyx, God Packs feature a curated collection of high-rarity cards. The 2027 iteration introduces a modern twist across standard and collector configurations.
Standard Booster God Packs contain 14 rare or mythic rare cards structured as follows:
- 1 God Pack celebration card
- 10 Non-foil rare and/or mythic rare cards
- 2 Non-foil Booster Fun rare and/or mythic rare cards
- 2 Traditional foil Booster Fun rare and/or mythic rare cards
Collector Booster God Packs are configured for high-end collectors, containing a stacked lineup:
- 1 God Pack celebration card
- 3 Foil default frame rare and/or mythic rare cards
- 3 Non-foil Booster Fun rare and/or mythic rare cards
- 5 Foil Booster Fun rare and/or mythic rare cards
Wizards of the Coast confirmed that retail prices for all booster products will remain unchanged despite the structural updates.
Tournament Protocols for God Pack Pulls
Opening 14 rare or mythic cards in a single draft or sealed pack creates an immediate competitive imbalance. To address this, Wizards of the Coast has issued official guidelines for local game stores and tournament organizers.
If a player opens a God Pack during an official event, they must immediately pause and call a judge or tournament organizer. Official event protocols recommend celebrating the find, removing the God Pack from competitive play so the player can keep it for their personal collection, and replacing the pack free of charge with an unopened standard booster from the same set so the player can continue their match.
Broader Booster Changes in 2027
Alongside the return of God Packs, Wizards of the Coast is streamlining nomenclature and cutting low-excitement card slots to manage printing complexity.
Play Boosters are officially dropping their prefix to become simply known as “Booster Packs.” Foil common and uncommon cards are being removed from standard packs, meaning a foil card will no longer be guaranteed in every pack. To compensate, the drop rate for foil rare and mythic rare cards in standard packs will increase from approximately 7% to 10%, and traditional-foil Japan Showcase cards will now be obtainable in the wildcard slot.
Collector Boosters are also shedding two foil commons and one foil uncommon without replacements. According to the publisher, these lower-tier slots were frequently skipped by players during pack openings, and their removal clears critical printing capacity required to produce the new God Packs and expanded foil options.
