The BBC has expanded the ensemble cast for its upcoming six-part Agatha Christie adaptation, Hercule. Principal photography is underway in Liverpool, where the network and co-producer BritBox North America are bringing the origin story of the famous Belgian sleuth to life.
Leading the project is actor Edward Bluemel as a younger Hercule Poirot. Bluemel is joined by a newly announced roster of talent that includes Death in Paradise star Ralf Little alongside Jessica Alexander, Honor Swinton Byrne, Omari Douglas, Paul Forman, Arthur Hughes, River Medway, Katherine Parkinson, Natalie Quarry, and Toby Stephens.
This casting builds upon a lineup revealed earlier by the network. The ensemble also features Henry Ashton, James D’Arcy, Calvin Demba, Phil Dunning, Jack Gleeson, Tamsin Greig, James Nesbitt, Guy Remmers, Rebecca Rittenhouse, and Mawaan Rizwan. Production images from the Liverpool set show James Nesbitt in period attire consisting of a tailored coat and top hat for an unannounced role, alongside Bluemel in Poirot’s signature suit and moustache.
What Is the Plot of BBC’s Hercule?
Produced by Mammoth Screen in association with Agatha Christie Limited, Hercule is designed as an intimate study of Poirot and a portrait of Britain between the world wars. Rather than focusing on the older detective of Christie’s later novels, the six-part drama chronicles Poirot’s early cases in London to show how he became the world’s greatest detective.
Production details indicate the series centers on three of Agatha Christie’s early stories. Peril at End House will serve as the second novel adapted for the screen, following Lord Edgware Dies. The narrative charts the burgeoning friendship between Poirot and Captain Arthur Hastings, details his early encounters with Scotland Yard’s James Japp, and introduces him to future allies and a nemesis.
Production Team and Creative Direction
The psychological depth and period aesthetic of the adaptation are shaped by a seasoned creative team. The six-part series is written by Benji Walters, whose previous credits include Code of Silence, The Leopard, and Obsession.
Directing duties are split across the series. Jonny Campbell directs the first two episodes, Chanya Button handles episodes three and four, and Alrick Riley directs the final two installments. Charlie Palmer serves as series producer. Executive producers include Benji Walters, Jonny Campbell, James Prichard for Agatha Christie Limited, Rebecca Durbin and Damien Timmer for Mammoth Screen, Nick Lambon for the BBC, and Robert Schildhouse, Jon Farrar, and Stephen Nye for BritBox.
Global Release and Broadcast Details
Global distribution for Hercule is managed by Fifth Season. When the series debuts in 2027, UK audiences can watch it on BBC One and stream it via BBC iPlayer. Viewers in North America can watch the drama exclusively on BritBox.
With Agatha Christie’s novels having sold more than 750 million copies globally over the past century, Hercule aims to offer a fresh perspective on a literary legend while honoring the legacy of his earlier adventures.
