Jaguar Unveils Type 01 EV GT Sedan: Specs, Price and Debut

October 7, 2026 3 min read 0 comments

Jaguar Land Rover officially unveiled the all-electric Jaguar Type 01 Grand Tourer in New York on Tuesday night, marking a radical $172,000 repositioning of the British luxury brand. The high-profile debut follows two years of widespread public controversy regarding the company’s complete brand overhaul and the suspension of its legacy vehicle lineup.

The high-performance four-door sedan is engineered to challenge top-tier luxury and performance manufacturers. Powered by a sophisticated tri-motor electric setup, the Type 01 generates an astonishing 1,015 horsepower and 1,007 pound-feet of torque. This immense power output propels the vehicle from zero to 62 mph in just 3.2 seconds.

Advanced Powertrain and Charging Architecture

Beneath its striking exterior, the Type 01 is built on Jaguar’s dedicated new JEA (Jaguar Electric Architecture) platform. The vehicle features an advanced 850-volt electrical architecture paired with a substantial 118-kWh battery pack.

  • Horsepower: 1,015 hp from a tri-motor setup
  • Torque: 1,007 lb-ft (1,300 Nm)
  • Acceleration: 0-62 mph in 3.2 seconds
  • Battery Capacity: 118-kWh pack
  • Driving Range: Up to 400 miles (estimated)
  • Charging Speed: 10% to 80% replenishment in 22 minutes via high-capacity DC fast charging

JLR executive leadership confirmed that initial customer deliveries are scheduled to begin in the second half of 2027, with sales in the Chinese market intentionally delayed for several years to prioritize North American and European buyers.

Exterior Design and Minimalist Interior

Measuring over 5.2 meters long and 2 meters wide, the Type 01 commands a massive road presence that significantly exceeds standard British parking dimensions, reflecting its explicit target audience of wealthy North American buyers.

The exterior style draws inspiration from classic heritage models while introducing futuristic elements. It features a long bonnet reminiscent of the iconic 1960s E-Type, active aerodynamic vanes, a three-stage deployable rear spoiler, and massive 23-inch wheels. In a bold styling choice, the traditional rear window has been entirely eliminated, replaced instead by an advanced rear-facing digital camera system akin to setups seen on modern specialty EVs.

Inside, the cabin breaks away from conventional digital-heavy layouts. The minimalist interior is split into four distinct passenger zones by a central architectural element referred to by designers as the “spine.” Materials draw inspiration from travertine stone, textured fabrics, and brass-finished accents, aiming for an atmosphere closer to a luxury modern apartment than a traditional car cockpit.

Financial Pressures and Strategic Rebrand

The arrival of the Type 01 comes at a critical financial crossroads for parent company JLR. The luxury automaker recently announced 4,000 job cuts and a £1.7 billion cost-saving program following a £1.9 billion cyberattack and sliding sales figures in key international markets like China.

JLR Chief Commercial Officer Leonard Hoornik defended the company’s aggressive pivot during a recent investor briefing, noting that initial consumer skepticism has slowly given way to positive momentum. Priced between £120,000 and upwards of £150,000 (roughly $172,000 USD), the Type 01 aims to wedge itself cleanly between mainstream premium alternatives like BMW and Mercedes-Benz and elite ultra-luxury marques such as Bentley and Aston Martin.

With production of its previous mainstream models entirely halted, Jaguar has staked its corporate survival entirely on this new generation of high-end electric vehicles. The world will watch closely to see if wealthy buyers embrace the brand’s bold, combustion-free future when deliveries commence in 2027.
