

The City of Alexandria announced schedule adjustments, facility closures, and modified public services for Indigenous Peoples Day on Monday, October 12. The City has recognized Indigenous Peoples Day since 2019, aligning its municipal schedule with the federal holiday.
Residents should prepare for changes affecting public education, public transportation, waste management, and government offices. Below is a breakdown of what is open, closed, or operating on alternative schedules during the holiday.
City Offices and Judicial System Closures
All City of Alexandria government offices will remain closed on Monday, October 12. The judicial system will also observe the holiday closure. The Alexandria General District Court, Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court, Court Service Unit, Circuit Court, and the Clerk of Circuit Court will be shut down for the day.
The Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) office will be closed. Customers can still access more than 50 standard services online 24/7 via the official DMV Virginia website.
Alexandria City Public Schools (ACPS)
The holiday brings a modified schedule for students and educational staff:
- Students: Enjoy a student holiday with no classes held on Monday.
- Staff: Participate in a scheduled Professional Learning Day.
Public Transit and Parking Enforcement
Public transportation systems and parking regulations will shift to holiday guidelines:
- DASH Bus Service: Buses will operate on a Saturday-Sunday schedule. Lines 102, 103, and 104 will not run. DASH administrative offices are closed.
- King Street Trolley: Operates normally from the King Street Metro to City Hall/Market Square every 15 minutes between 11 a.m. and 11 p.m.
- Parking Restrictions: The Alexandria Police Department will suspend enforcement of parking restrictions at meters and residential permit parking districts for legal spaces only. Temporary no-parking signs remain strictly enforceable.
- Impound Lot: The city impound lot is closed. Fees will continue to accumulate over the weekend but will pause for the holiday itself.
Waste Collection and Resource Recovery
Residential trash, recycling, curbside food waste, and yard waste collections will be delayed by one day for the entire week following the holiday:
- Monday collections move to Tuesday, October 13.
- Tuesday collections move to Wednesday, October 14.
- Wednesday collections move to Thursday, October 15.
- Thursday collections move to Friday, October 16.
- Friday food waste collections move to Saturday, October 17.
Additionally, the Household Hazardous Waste and Electronic Collection Drop-off Center will be closed on Monday.
Recreation, Health Facilities, and Museums
Public facilities maintain varied operating hours:
- Recreation Centers: Charles Houston Recreation Center, Chinquapin Recreation Center, and Patrick Henry Recreation Center will open from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. All other recreation facilities and nature centers are closed.
- Health Facilities: The Alexandria Health Department, Flora Krause Casey Health Center, and Teen Wellness Center clinics are closed.
- Historic Sites: Gadsby’s Tavern Museum and the Stabler-Leadbeater Apothecary Museum will be open from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. All other Historic Alexandria museums remain closed.
- Torpedo Factory Art Center: Open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
- Animal Welfare League of Alexandria (AWLA): Open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., with adoptions beginning at 12 p.m. Animal emergencies can be reported at 703-746-4444.
