Prime Video has officially greenlit an eight-episode scripted drama series based on the high-profile Karen Read case. Actress and filmmaker Elizabeth Banks will star in the title role and serve as an executive producer. Amazon MGM Studios announced the project has moved from development to a full series order, produced in partnership with Warner Bros. Television.

The one-hour drama is inspired by the Law&Crime and Audible Original podcast “Karen.” Justin Noble, known for his work on The Lives of College Girls and Brooklyn Nine-Nine, will write, showrun, and executive produce the series. Veteran creator David E. Kelley will also executive produce alongside Noble and Banks.

The Narrative and True Crime Context

The series follows the discovery of a Boston police officer found dead in the snow during a blizzard. Suspicion immediately falls on his girlfriend, Karen Read. Read and her legal team maintain her innocence, arguing she is being framed to protect the true perpetrators. The series aims to explore the case details while examining modern society’s obsession with true crime.

Production and Creative Team

The project is a collaboration between several major production entities. Executive producers include Max Handelman and Krissy Wall (Brownstone Productions), David E. Kelley and Matthew Tinker (David E. Kelley Productions), Aaron Hart, Marshall Lewy, Jeni Mulein, and Jen Sargent (Audible), and Rachel Stockman and Dan Abrams (Law&Crime).

Peter Friedlander, head of global television at Amazon MGM Studios, stated: “At its core, this series is about what happens when truth becomes a matter of perspective and an entire community is forced to confront its own deepest divisions. With Justin Noble’s sharp storytelling and Elizabeth Banks’ captivating presence, we believe this will be a defining series.”

Background and Unauthorized Status

The real-world case drew national attention during a highly scrutinized trial. When Amazon announced the project in 2025, Karen Read noted that the dramatization was unauthorized. Her attorney, Alan Jackson, stated that her story belongs to her to tell.

Despite the lack of cooperation from Read, the production team is utilizing the investigative reporting from the “Karen” podcast. Elizabeth Banks, who grew up in Massachusetts, shared her perspective on the project:

“I grew up in Massachusetts, and like so many people there, we watched this case divide families, friends, and entire towns,” Banks said. “We have spent years with this material because the questions it raises go far beyond one courtroom: why we choose the stories we believe, and what happens when trust in our institutions breaks down.”

As production begins, the series intends to examine themes of justice, public perception, and institutional accountability.
