Actor John Hannah has signaled that he is preparing to discuss the possibility of a second season of the detective comedy Benidorm Is Murder with Channel 5 executive Greg Barnett. The potential talks follow a positive reception from audiences and critics alike since the show premiered earlier in 2026.
Appearing on ITV’s Lorraine on Friday, October 9, Hannah expressed a strong personal interest in continuing the series, though an official renewal from the broadcaster has not yet been confirmed.
Inside the Success of Channel 5’s Cosy Crime Hit
Created by a writer behind the popular mystery series Death in Paradise, Benidorm Is Murder has successfully captured viewer attention with its unique blend of sunny escapism and lighthearted mystery. In the series, John Hannah stars as Dennis, a former detective who makes the life-changing decision to relocate to Benidorm and open a Scottish beachside bar.
Rather than enjoying a quiet retirement, Dennis finds himself continually drawn back into solving crimes. He teams up with an unlikely partner, a barmaid named Rosa, played by Carolina Becquer. The ensemble cast also features performances by Eva Van der Gucht, Ariadna Cabrol, and high-profile guest stars including Denise Welch and Sunil Patel.
Why John Hannah Wants to Return
During his interview on Lorraine, Hannah pointed to the distinct comedic tone of the scripts as his primary reason for joining the project and his eagerness to return. He noted that his character’s self-awareness sets the show apart from traditional, straightforward detective dramas.
“The thing that I liked about this script is that Dennis, the cop, has a sense of humour,” Hannah told host Lorraine Kelly. “He’s aware of, like, how silly things are that surround him, which you don’t often get.”
Host Lorraine Kelly voiced her support for the lighthearted mystery format, telling viewers she is “over grim and gritty” television. Prompted by the host about whether he would contact the network to push for more episodes, Hannah joked, “I will be talking to Greg as soon as I get off this sofa,” referring to Channel 5 Commissioning Editor and Executive Producer Greg Barnett.
What Are the Chances of Season 2?
While Hannah remains enthusiastic about reprising his role as Dennis Crown, the ultimate fate of the series depends on standard television metrics. Speaking previously to Digital Spy, the actor acknowledged that future developments hinge on viewership figures and economic viability for Channel 5.
However, network executives have previously indicated a proactive approach to the show’s future. Before the series even hit screens, Greg Barnett revealed that the creative team had already begun looking ahead. Barnett told the press that developers were drafting potential scripts for a second season, keeping their fingers crossed that the cosy crime concept would resonate with viewers.
As ratings and audience engagement remain strong, fans waiting for official word on Benidorm Is Murder Season 2 can stream current episodes directly through Channel 5.
