Strictly Come Dancing judge Craig Revel Horwood has firmly defended the BBC dance competition’s new presenting team after an initial wave of mixed reactions from viewers. Stepping into the roles held by long-running stalwarts Tess Daly and Claudia Winkleman, the newly formed trio consists of Emma Willis, Josh Widdicombe, and Johannes Radebe.
As he returns for his 24th series on the show, Craig remains the only member of the original on-screen team involved since its launch in 2004. Speaking candidly about the major transition, the 61-year-old judge compared welcoming the new hosts to introducing a fresh face into a family dynamic, acknowledging that early nerves and friction are completely natural.
Comparing the New Lineup to an Awkward Family Christmas
Reflecting on the adjustments required for a refreshed presenting panel, Craig offered a humorous take on the public’s initial hesitation. Speaking to the press, he noted that building professional rapport takes time and patience from both the crew and the audience.
“As a new team, as we’re all aware, it’s like having a new family member,” Craig explained. “You know… you’re just meeting, and the first Christmas together with the daughter’s new husband could be awkward.”
Despite early viewer criticisms directed particularly toward the dynamic of the broader trio, Craig insisted that the team is doing a very good job and expressed total confidence that they will quickly find their footing and succeed.
Individual Praise for Emma Willis, Josh Widdicombe, and Johannes Radebe
Craig broke down his thoughts on each of the new presenters, offering high praise for their individual strengths:
- Emma Willis: Singling out the former Big Brother presenter as brilliant, Craig admitted he loves working with her. He praised her calm demeanor under pressure, stating, “She knows exactly what she’s doing. She’s very natural.”
- Josh Widdicombe: Addressing the comedian, Craig highlighted his spontaneous humor. “Josh is very funny when he’s off the cuff,” he noted. “I know that he will come into his own. He’s absolutely hilarious when he gets going.”
- Johannes Radebe: Having transitioned from professional dancer to presenter, Johannes brings a unique perspective to the role. Craig pointed out that having a host with an extensive background in dance is unprecedented for the show, allowing Johannes to offer expert insight: “JoJo can actually say, ‘Girl, you know, that ronde was amazing. How did you do that? I know how hard that is to do.’”
Dismissing Backlash and Embracing Change
While some dedicated fans expressed disappointment over Johannes stepping away from the dance floor after seven successful series as a professional dancer and choreographer, Craig offered a blunt response to the complaints: “I know, but life moves on. So get over it.”
Craig also joked about a minor clash between himself and Johannes, noting that the new host has started adopting his signature catchphrase, “darling.” He quipped that he is actively trying to avoid using the word himself now that Johannes has picked it up.
Alongside the fresh presenting lineup, the new series of Strictly Come Dancing features significant changes, including five new professional dancers joining the lineup. With the experienced judging panel of Craig, Shirley Ballas, Motsi Mabuse, and Anton Du Beke remaining firmly in place, the show aims to balance comforting continuity with an exciting new era.
